We can stun Rangers and reach Champions League dream despite not having home tie, insists Union Saint-Gilloise star

DANTE VANZEIR says Union Saint-Gilloise believe they can stun Rangers — even if they’re not playing on their own turf.

The Ibrox side have been drawn against the Belgians in the Champions League third qualifying round.

Giovanni van Bronckorst’s side, who will seal a £4million deal for Liverpool defender Ben Davies in the next 24 hours, are favourites to reach the play-off round.

And last season’s beaten Europa League finalists have been boosted by the news that the away leg is set to be switched from Union’s 9,400-capacity Stade Joseph Marien ground to OH Leuven’s stadium.

But Vanzeir, who has been called into Roberto Martinez’s international squad, says Union fancy their chances of an upset.

The frontman said: “Why not? I think we have to go full for the win at home. That is our chance to prove something.

“It becomes difficult in the away leg, there you probably go into the game, going for a draw.

“If you can keep a clean sheet there, then that’s always a really good thing and if you can score a goal, it’s even better.

“We have nothing to lose and everything to gain in Europe and I think we should start with that mindset.”

Union’s home isn’t expected to meet Uefa regulations as traditional terracing makes up three sides of the historic ground.

Discussions were still taking place last night in a bid to find a solution to the problem ahead of the crunch meeting on August 2 or 3.

But Belgian international winger Vanzeir believes Karel Geraerts’ men can end Gers’ Champions League dream.

He added: “It’s hard to estimate this tie. I think there are no easy matches. There are strong teams in the draw such as Benfica and we then draw Rangers. I think if you got Dynamo Kiev, it wouldn’t be easy either.

“We know what the level is in Europe and we have to be 100 per cent ready.”

Gers will travel to Belgium for the first leg tie, with the return in Glasgow on August 9.

Meanwhile, Davies is expected to join up with van Bronckhorst’s men in the coming days, with Calvin Bassey checking out.

The 26-year-old is in talks to complete his switch to Rangers from Liverpool in a £4m deal first revealed by SunSport on Sunday.

While Davies prepares to move to Scotland, Nigerian international Bassey is putting the finishing touches to his £23m move to Dutch giants Ajax.
