No Nut November / NNN

About

No Nut November, or NNN for short, is a No Fap Month in which participants attempt to abstain from masturbation for the entire month of November. Traces of the internet challenge date back to the early 2010s, but it became more prevalent online in the late 2010s and early 2020s after spreading to other social media platforms. The exact rules for the NNN challenge vary between sites and communities, with some allowing for "coupons" while others explicitly forbid all forms of masturbation.

Origin

On November 3rd, 2011, Urban Dictionary^[6][12] user bicboi6969696969 submitted an entry for "No Nut November," defining it as a challenge in which "an individual must not masturbate for the month of November." In November 2017, references to a "No Nut November" challenge began circulating in various circlejerk and meme communities online (shown below)

Spread

On November 1st, 2017, Twitter user @I_H8THOTS^[2] tweeted "Not even a day into No Nut November and I've already beat my meat like it owes me money" (shown below).

The tweet was subsequently submitted to /r/BlackPeopleTwitter,^[3] where it gathered upwards of 33,100 points (88% upvoted) and 1,200 comments over the next week. That day, YouTuber
THREEIO uploaded a video titled "Welcome to No Nut November!" (shown below).

On November 3rd, 2017, an anonymous 4chan user submitted a thread challenging the /pol/ (politically incorrect) board to No Nut November.^[4] That day, Twitter user @BillRatchet^[5] tweeted a joke about his experience urinating after abstaining from masturbating for two days (shown below).

On November 4th, Redditor krys2015 submitted a post asking "What is with no nut November?" to /r/OutOfTheLoop.^[1] On November 7th, Twitter user @CuteEmergency posted an image macro announcing that "No Nut November" participants are allowed three "strikes" before failing the challenge (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet gathered upwards of 1,900 likes and 670 retweets.

NNN Challenge Rules

According to the subreddit /r/nonutnovember,^[13] the official rules of the NNN challenge were posted on November 1st, 2018, by Redditor yeeval, which received 2,600 upvotes and 575 comments in four years. The rules posted were:

§ 1.1) ORGASM without EJACULATION (NUT) is a disqualification despite the subreddit's name

Despite being called No Nut November, what we're avoiding itself isn't the physical nut, but the orgasm. Hence, why pre-cum is allowed. But if your body goes through the physical sensation of an orgasm, even without any visible semen it is considered a disqualification.

§ 1.2) NEMs (Non-ejaculatory masturbation) and pre-cum are allowed. ORGASMS are the thing to avoid here, not masturbation or semen.

While I do want to state that I think this is a very bad and risky method to approaching this challenge, you are allowed to stroke as long as there is no orgasm. You are allowed to watch porn and touch yourself all you want, but any climax reached is an automatic disqualification. Pre-cum is allowed since it can occur without orgasm.

§ 1.3) NO THREE STRIKES RULE

First of all there is no three strikes rule. Any intentional completion of orgasm is a disqualification. Giving yourself a temporary out completely defeats the purpose of the challenge. This rule is only a clarification on loopholes that go around the internet.

§ 1.4) WET DREAMS ARE ALLOWED

Wet Dreams will not be considered a dis qualifier of No Nut November since they are completely unintentional.

§ 1.5) SEX IS A DISQUALIFICATION, BIRTHDAY SEX INCLUDED.

We get it, you have a girlfriend. Why are you even participating in this challenge? Nutting is nutting, so no you can't get a pass if somehow you convince someone to touch your peepee. Birthday sex will not be allowed within the game of No Nut November. It would be an unfair advantage to your fellow brothers who weren't conceived on Valentines Day.

§ 1.6) IF YOU USED A "COUPON", YOU MUST LAST UNTIL DECEMBER 1ST.

Upon some very intensive research I have learned that some outsiders have been handing out "One Nut Allowed" coupons and many of you poor souls have been buying this pagan concept as true. Out of mere mercy, I will allow those who have cashed in this coupon the first day to continue and redeem the challenge by lasting until December 1st, but from hereon after all coupons are null and void.

However, the rules have changed somewhat over the years, and they also differ between various NNN-related sites and communities. For example, in November 2022, an updated set of rules was shared around the /r/nonutnovember community and elsewhere online via an image post (seen below).

Coomer Pledge

On October 29th, 2019, Twitter user @TeapotLad suggested a to take a "Coomer Pledge" for the 2019 No Nut November.^[7] Those who took it pledged to change their social media profile picture to the image of Coomer in the event they failed the No Nut November challenge. The tweet received over 815 retweets and 2,000 likes in three days.

In the following days, several iFunny and Instagram accounts reposted the pledge, including popular reposts by GarfieldFan15,^[8] hydra_ironic.memes^[9] and salad.snake.^[10] On November 1st, 2019, Instagram user @bavid.basselhoff posted a meme imagining the US President Donald Trump putting up the Coomer profile picture, with the post receiving over 550 likes in six hours (shown below).^[11]
