The recent spate of crocodiles dying has raised the concern of possible poisoning from the Angolan side.
According to the Environment Ministry, about 20 crocodile carcasses have been found dead between 2019 and 2020 in the Kunene river but the exact number is still to be determined.
The Kunene river flows from the Angola highlands south to the border shared with Namibia. The Ministry said the Angolan authorities have been notified and engagements are ongoing.
The ministry further suspects that this can be retaliatory killings due to human-wildlife conflict on the other side of the river.
“Since this is a cross border problem, it requires a cross border solution. We also believe that any interventions, in this case, must be made through the relevant authorities since this is a matter currently under investigation,” said the ministry.
