Math teacher tied to tree with rope, thrashed for giving poor marks

A mathematics teacher and a clerk were tied to a tree with rope and were allegedly beaten by students of a government run Scheduled Tribe (ST) Residential School for giving poor marks during a practical examination in Jharkhand's Dumka.

Around 11 students of the school out of 32 procured Grade- DD (double D), which is considered equivalent to fail, in the class-9 examination, results of which was declared by Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) on Saturday, the police said.

The incident took place on Monday at a school in the Gopikandar police station area of the district.

The teacher was identified as Suman Kumar, while the clerk was Soneram Chaure. Both of them were beaten by a group of students over marks given during the practical examination. The 'angry' students also broke a chair during the incident.

After receiving information about the incident, Gopikandar block development officer (BDO) Anant Jha and Gopikandar police station in-charge Nityanand Bhokta reached the school to probe the matter.

Meanwhile, the students have alleged that they were deliberately given poor marks, resulting in 11 students failing the class 9 board exam. A total of 36 students took the test, of which 11 failed. When the student requested to see their practical papers, the principal allegedly refused. They then approached the clerk, who denied looking into their request.

Notably, the earlier principal of the school, Kumar Suman, was removed from the post after alleged casteism and denial of food on time. An FIR was registered against Suman under relevant sections of the SC/ST Act.
