The Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts

The Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts is the first art museum in the building of the Imperial Academy of Arts on the University Embankment, 17, of Vasilyevsky Island, St. Petersburg.

Claims to be the oldest art museum in Russia.

The museum occupies a historic building built in 1764-88 for the academy, designed by A. F. Kokorinov and J. B. Vallin-Delamote. Now, in addition to the NIM RAH, it houses the St. Petersburg State Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin, an archive, a library, laboratories and workshops.

The first floor is traditionally occupied by the Department of Casts from Antiques, the second floor is occupied by the “Academic Museum” (masterpieces of Western European painting, among them originals by A. Kaufman, A.R. Mengs, A. Celesti, L. Giordano, P.F. Mola; ” programs” or diploma works of outstanding graduates of the Imperial Academy of Arts from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century (among them is the sketch by I.E. Repin “The Angel Destroys the Pharaoh’s Firstborn”, the painting by V.D. Polenov “The Resurrection of the Daughter of Jairus”, “Cabbage Girl” by Nikolai Feshin ; master paintings by K. P. Bryullov, I. I. Shishkin).

A separate hall is dedicated to the most interesting and difficult period of the Academy’s existence – 1920-1930. Educational and graduation works of this period are presented, especially full – workshops of K. S. Petrov -Vodkin and A.E. Karev.

In addition, the permanent exhibition includes reliefs and sculptures by Russian masters of the XVIII-XIX centuries.

On the third floor – design models of famous buildings of St. Petersburg (exposition “Architecture of St. Petersburg XVIII-XIX centuries in models, drawings and drawings”).

Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 11:00-19:00. Cash desk closes at 18:00.

Thursday: 12:00–20:00. Cash desk closes at 19:00.

Monday, Tuesday – the museum is closed.
