A dialogue about academics' life in the Global south
Presentation: Navigating Shomoycapes and faculty life in the Global South: Bangladeshi faculty perspective

Amid growing studies of time in higher education, few have studied and theorized the interconnections between faculty life and temporality– the way we make sense of and relate to time changes–in the urban Global South context. Drawing on interviews and participant observations with 22 faculty in Dhaka, Bangladesh, we aim to illuminate the notion of shomoyscapes, and how such timescapes manifest among our faculty respondents. We argue that such faculty navigate shomoyscapes encompassing mixing and matching various temporal dimensions, and evoking agency within such timescapes. Such shomoyscapes manifest through various temporal dimensions such as: a) traffic time, b) university politics, and c) the future of others. We conclude with implications about temporality in academic life in rapidly growing HE systems in an urban South Asian context.
