a well-made 12 port, multi-HDMI monitor supported USB C Docking station with solid audio support!
iVANKY 4K@60Hz Macbook Pro Docking Station – all purpose USB C Docking StationUSB C offers a very diverse range of possibilities, but trying to figure out which Dock to buy can be a very frustrating and confusing experience. I’ve tried probably half a dozen or more so far and have returned all but two. One of the ones I kept is extremely portable, lightweight, fairly affordable and does what I need on the go. The other one is this new iVANKY model which is none of those things, but offers features my travel Dock simply cannot match. The specs are in the product title, but just in case, here’s a quick refresher to be sure we’re talking about the same unit since products change and reviews can be added to the wrong page/product on occasion. The one I’m reviewing here is the iVANKY 4K@60Hz MacBook Pro Docking Station with 180W Power Adapter, 12-in-2 Triple Display Powered Dock with 18W PD and USB 3.0 Ports, for MacBook Pro & Air (2 HDMI, RJ45, SD/TF, 6 USB Ports).I tested it with a 2017 13” MacBook Pro, 3.1 GHz Core i5 and 8gb ram with 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports. I also tried it out with a 2021 Mac mini with the new M1 chip, but we’ll get to those results a bit later.Plenty has already been said here about how well this Dock works, (for example check out the review from E_L_F from January 15. 2021 for a detailed blow by blow evaluation!) so I won’t dive into every possible config and or various speed tests etc.Unique over most USB C Docks is the dual-USB C connecting cable provided. I connected it to my 13” MacBook Pro, ran HDMI cables to two separate monitors, an older Dell 30” U3011t and a Dell 38” U3818DW. All three displays showed up just fine, though I was not able to get the full 2560 x 1600 at 60 Hz resolution out of the U3011t. I tried using an HDMI to DisplayPort adapter as well as a dedicated DisplayPort to HDMI cable, but neither of those setups would connect with any signal at all. Sadly, the highest rez I could get was a standard 1920 x 1200. On the other hand, the U3918DW displayed the full 3840 x 1600 albeit with a “low resolution” disclaimer shown in the macOS Display panel, something which I am guessing is due to integrated Intel Iris Plus Graphics 650 GPU used in my Mac. Nonetheless there were three monitors (including the internal display) all working just great and all using just my slightly dated Core i5 13” MacBook Pro.To test out the various ports I added a 64gb Flash drive, a 32gb SD card, two USB 3 compatible external bus powered drives (one was an SSD and the other a Hybrid drive), a USB C drive plus a gigabit ethernet connection and everything worked great with fast transfer speeds and no noticeable lags that I could detect, something I was a bit surprised by as all of these devices are USB Bus powered. I was also surprised how cool the Dock stayed to the touch with all of these connections going on, including being the power source for the MacBook Pro itself, something I’m sure the large external power brick helps accomplish. As I’m an audio engineer in much of my day-to-day work, something I always look for is how the 3.5mm audio output port is handled in a USB C Dock. Thankfully iVANKY does it right and allows for the macOS Sound panel to control the level as a standard USB Audio device. Surprisingly most low to mid-priced USB C Docks I’ve tried tend to take over the audio output, and either don’t allow for full output level, and or, no control at all from the Mac itself, both pf which for me are a total deal breaker.Last for now, as I mentioned at the top, I also tried this Dock with a 2021 Mac mini (the one with the new Apple M1 chip). USB port wise it worked just fine, but no matter what I tried with the iVANKY I could only get one monitor to display. Unfortunately, this is a known issue with these Macs, as the only way to currently use an M1 Mac mini with two monitors is to connect one via HDMI and the other using Thunderbolt 4. Having full multi-monitor and allowing for three displays would be great if Apple supported dual HDMI output in the current M1 lineup. Perhaps the next generation M2? or MX? series Macs will see this limitation corrected; time will tell.At $139 this is not a ‘buy it now’ type purchase, but if you’re a 2016 or later MacBook Pro or 2018 or later MacBook Air owner in the market for a seriously well-made 12 port, multi-HDMI monitor supported USB C Docking station with solid audio support, rest assured you won’t go wrong with this Docking Station.PROS* 12 ports all of which work just as advertised* Multi monitor support, in my example 3 screens running simultaneously with no noticeable lags or glitching of screen performance* Hefty 180-watt 9-amp power supply keeps everything running smoothly* Audio output is handled properly via the 3.5mm port* Works great with most USB C Mac laptops (M1 series has video caveats)* You get what you pay for and this Dock is right up there in the premium categoryCONS* In my opinion this is not a lightweight travel Dock, this is a weighty little beast and needs to be plugged into an AC source, perhaps not a real negative aspect, but something to keep in mind before purchasing.* a bit pricey for the average user* No support for video over its two USB C ports* Not multi-monitor compatible with 2021 Mac mini (a limitation of the current Apple M1 hardware and not iVANKY)* The dual-USB C connecting cable limits its compatibility with some USB C devicesExtra Considerations…* I encountered a strange charging issue where my MacBook Pro shows that it is charging as expected with the iVANKY Dual USB C cable connected, only to suddenly find that my battery is totally flat and the Mac shuts off, even though the Dual cable was never disconnected. This happened twice and after rebooting the Mac I have-not seen it happen again. I’m currently waiting to hear back from iVANKY tech to see what they have to say about it.* One other thing I did not care for (and noted in other reviews here) was when the MacBook Pro goes into screen saver mode, after a few minutes the fans spun up dramatically, something I have almost never had happen save for when working with some intense Final Cut Pro X rendering, and ever that is a very rare occasion. Here’s hoping something can be done on iVANKY’s part firmware wise etc. to help alleviate this annoying artifact of an otherwise pretty stellar USB C docking station.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome iVanky docking station, great price performance ratio in this class. Highly recommend.
Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2021
This is a very nicely built iVanky USB-C hub.

Packaging is reminiscent of an apple product, nice unboxing experience, well packaged.

Product itself is solid, nice heft to it. Power brick is hefty as well.

With this hub, the dual USB connector provides power to the Macbook as well as 4 USB 3.0A ports 2 on the back and 2 on the front, Micro SD and SD cards, 3.5mm audio out a USB C port AND the USB-C PD port is a nice quick charger that provides power delivery.

I hooked up my phone to it and quick charging works.

Ethernet port on the back as well.

What's also nice with this type of hub is that it provides power directly instead of having to hook up your macbook charger to it as a passthrough and will provide power for other devices.

And unlike larger docks, it is also small enough to toss in a backpack as needed.

Personally I use this as a desk docking station and have the portable 7 port iVanky hub for travel.

Build quality like I said is solid, the housing has a very nice glossy piano black finish.

Everything is plug and play, ethernet, HDMI, audio, everything is detected automatically.

I've tested this on 2 different Macbooks, a 2020 16 inch Macbook Pro with dGPU (intel version) with MacOS Catalina and on a 2017 Macbook Pro 13 inch with MacOS Mojave.

The thing that I normally check for with any kind of hub or docking station device that is how display signals are handled.

And what I like most about this docking station is that it sends HDMI at 4K 60Hz in native mode.

In the pictures attached, on the 16 inch MBP with dGPU all 3 display signals are native MacOS

On the 13 inch because it doesn't have a dGPU, the iGPU handles 2 native and the other 4K signal is non-native.

Also bear in mind Catalina vs Mojave.

But overall, this dock is great for the price, great quality, plenty of ports and a good alternative to other ones in a higher price bracket.
