The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in St. Petersburg

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a stauropegial Orthodox church on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg.

It was built by the courtyard of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Now it belongs to the courtyard of the Kozelskaya Svyato-Vvedenskaya Optina Hermitage.

The Church is five-domed, pillarless, with a capacity of up to 2,000 people. The project is designed in Russian style. Built using both brick and concrete.

The lower part of the building is faced with gray granite, the upper part with Radom sandstone.

14 grades of facing bricks were supplied by M. V. Nesterov’s Riga plant. The outdoor mosaics were made in the workshop of V. A. Frolov.

During the construction of the temple, for the first time in St. Petersburg, the smooth parts of the domes were lined with aluminum sheets.
