Summary:
Ivan dmitritch,a middle-class man lived with an income of twelve hundred a year and satisfied a lot.He sat on sofa after supper and reading newspaper.
Ivan asked the lottery ticket number to search for the number in the newspaper.His wife said series 9499,number 26.He had no faith in lottery but he had nothing to do.So,he searched for the number and his eyes got by the figure 9499 on the second line from top.He dropped the newspaper without seeing the number.It is our series so there is more possibility for us to win the prize money.The prize is seventy five thousand.They taught only of the figure 9499 and 75000 and started their imagination.Ivan holding the newspaper walking corner to corner.He said the ticket is yours but if it is mine I would spend twenty five thousand on real estate,ten thousand on immediate expenses like furniture,travel,paying debts etc...and forty thousand in bank to get interest.Then he wanted to but a summer villa and imagined to eat a summer soup,cold as ice,he lay on his back on the burning sand close to a stream or in the garden under lime-tree.His little boy and girl are digging in the sand and catching ladybirds in the grass.He goes to hayfield to the forest for mushrooms,or watches the peasants catching the fish with nets.He thought he need not go to office hereafter.He wants to take bath after sunset.After bath there is a tea with cream and milk rolls.In the evening a walk or vint with the neighbours.At St.Martin's summer he wants to take a long walk about the garden and besides the river and then to drink a big glass of vodka,eat a salted mushroom or a soused cucumber and to drink again.The children bringing a carrot and a raddish smelling of fresh Earth from garden.And then he would lie on full length sofa and reading illustrated magazine.During St.Martin's summer weather will be rainy.So the dogs,horses,fowls are all wet.Suddenly he stopped his imagination and "I should go abroad somewhere to south of France or to Italy or to India" he said to his wife Masha.He wanted to travel alone.He imagined his wife with multitude of parcels,baskets and bags;she would be complaining that the train made her head ache.He would continually run for  boiling water,bread and butter.She would shut herself up in the hotel and not let me out of her sight.So he wants to go alone.He thought that the lottery ticket is her's so she would have lock all the money or she will look after her relatives.Then he thought about his relatives. If I gave them money they would ask for more money and if I won't give them more they will give all kinds of misfortunes.He thought his relatives as reptiles and her wife might give him hundred roubles if she win.He read the fourth page on the newspaper Series 9499! number 46 not 26! They lose the lottery and he wants to hang himself on the first aspen tree.
