Sex And Weed: Survey Shows Cannabis Consumers Have More Sex Than Non-Consumers, Prefer Pot For V-Day

This article is more than 2 years old.

Older and married cannabis consumers are having plenty of sex – aided by the herb, middle-aged women agree that they'd rather have cannabis than chocolate or flowers on Valentine’s Day, the South gets super horny with weed and parents seem to be using pot to create bedroom spark or explore. These are some of the key findings of a recent sex ad cannabis study conducted by The Harris Poll among almost 2,000 U.S. adults over the age of 21.

Commissioned by MariMed’s Betty’s Eddies, the survey revealed cannabis consumers have sex more frequently than non-consumers. Many of them also believe using cannabis enhances their sex life.

To provide an extra boost to these consumers’ sex drives, Betty’s Eddies released a chewable candy dubbed Smashin’ Passion, which features a blend of natural aphrodisiacs designed to put consumers “in the mood.”

Mo’ Weed, Mo’ Sex

The sex and weed survey was conducted online among 1,967 adults aged 21 or more in the U.S. Out of them, 763 declared consuming cannabis with significant THC levels.

Interestingly, 50% of sexually active adults who consume cannabis disclosed having sex several times each week. This compares to a 35% rate for non-consumers.

Furthermore, 65% of sexually active cannabis consumers agree that cannabis enhances their sex life, while 67% say that it helps get them in the mood for sex. More than half see the plant as a natural aphrodisiac – this is especially true for cannabis users aged 35-44.

“All the flavors in our award-winning Betty’s Eddies line-up were developed with great taste, consistency, and a specific consumer need in mind; for Smashin’ Passion, that need is the cannabis user’s desire to enhance their sex life,” said MariMed chief operating officer Tim Shaw. “This survey validates our product development strategy and ingredient selection, that yes, cannabis users want and have more sex than non-users.”

General Cannabis Consumption Habits

  • 53% of cannabis users consume once a week or more.
  • 30% consume once a day or more.
  • 43% of cannabis users prefer flower, 29% prefer edibles, 9% prefer drinks, 9% prefer concentrates.

Sexual Activity

  • 76% of cannabis consumers are sexually active.
  • 49% of cannabis users 65+ are sexually active.
  • Of those, 62% are having sex once a week or more.
  • 87% of married cannabis users are sexually active. Among this group, 62% are having sex once a week or more.

V-Day Flowers, Reimagined

One of the most unique findings in this survey relates to Valentine’s Day. It seems, more and more people prefer weed over chocolates for this love celebration.

According to the survey:

  • 53% of non-married cannabis consumers said they’d want cannabis as a gift on V-day.
  • 35% of married consumers said the same.
  • 38% of female cannabis consumers aged 45-55 would rather receive cannabis than chocolate on V-Day, compared to 13% of men aged 45-55.

  • 52% of sexually active cannabis consumers prefer edibles over smoking cannabis to get in the mood for sex.

Pot And Parenting

The MariMed-Harris Poll survey also looked into cannabis and parenting and found that:

  • Cannabis users with children in the household (82%) and parents with a child under 18 (82%) plan on incorporating cannabis into Valentine’s Day plans, versus 64% ad 66% respectively, for people without kids. “This says to me that people with kids are either looking to create new sparks or are more explorative,” explained a MariMed representative.
  • Cannabis users with children in the household (71%) and parents with a child under 18 (70%) agree that cannabis helps them get in the mood for sex compared to those without (56% and 57%, respectively).
  • The data paints a similar story for those who agree that using cannabis makes them more likely to want sex, that cannabis enhances their sex life and that cannabis helps their partner get in the mood for sex.
  • Cannabis users who are a parent with a child under 18 want cannabis as a gift on V-day (52%), more compared to those who aren't parents with a child under 18 (41%).

Down And Dirty

Finally, the pollsters broke down the data by regions:

  • 79% of cannabis users in the South said they will incorporate cannabis into Valentine’s Day plans, compared to 66% of the Midwest.
  • 73% of cannabis users in the South agree that Cannabis enhanced their sex life, more than any other region (53% Northeast, 54% Midwest, 56% West).
