Komal Devi, a 25 year old Bagariya woman living in Kotri village of Ajmer district in Rajasthan, practices open bleeding which severely limits her mobility and capacity to earn a livelihood (despite being employed by MNREGA). The acute water scarcity in Kotri due to declining groundwater levels and proximity to the Sambhar Salt Lake has forced the Bagariyas to ration water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, etc. This is worsened by lack of privacy, poor immunity and health due to reduced water consumption and nutrition.

Initially, The Red Cycle had placed a field associate in Kotri in order to closely understand the ground reality of the community in focus and conduct a need assessment and online campaign. Our aim was to understand their challenges and derive long-term sustainable community interventions. However, due to the COVID-19 situation, the fieldwork had to be suspended for six months from May to October. The pandemic has had an adverse effect on the Bagariya community as they are unable to find any means of income. This has aggravated their existing conditions of water scarcity, malnutrition and poor menstrual health. Moreover, lack of proper sanitation and health facilities makes the community more prone to the virus.

Manthan Sanstha, our ground support organisation, is providing aid to the Bagariyas by spreading awareness about the virus and distributing essential commodities like food items and masks. At present, the community requires ration kits and food storage systems. We aim to support Manthan by providing funds for these immediate needs of the community.
The Red Cycle, with your help, can provide the Bagariyas with these necessities. At this time of crisis, please donate and support our campaign.

Warmly,
