What is tongue-tie?
Tongue-tie is when a baby’s tongue is attached to the base of the mouth. This is sometimes diagnosed during the routine newborn check, but also may not be evident until your baby has problems feeding due to the inability to latch and breastfeed efficiently.
General characteristics include:
· Pain with breastfeeding
· Notched or heart-shaped tongue
· Trouble latching
· Feeding for long time with short breaks
· Being unsettled and hungry
· Failure to gain weight
· Making “clicking” sound during feeds
If your baby is experiencing any of the above signs you may want to discuss these issues.
Tongue-tie in older children could sometimes cause problems such as speech difficulties. These may require assessment and treatment.
Consultation and procedure
An initial consultation will take place during which a full medical history will be taken and your child will be examined. The parents will be informed about the procedure.
If your child is less than 3 months of age, the procedure will be performed on the same day at the time of consultation. If your child is more than 3 months of age, the procedure will be scheduled for another date as this may require to be performed under anaesthesia.
