Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria

CFUW National President letter to The Right Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly on the disaster in Türkiye and Syria.

On the ground report from Turkish University Women’s Association:

Dear GWI Board, NFAs, friends,

Thank you very much for your heartfelt messages from all over the world. We feel your solidarity.

7.7 and 7.8 magnitude two severe earthquakes struck 10 cities of our lovely country killing thousands of people (exp.50.000)and many more injured, some still waiting to be rescued. This is the disaster of the century, as the newspapers wrote. One of the biggest in Turkey since 1930s. 7 days of national mourning is announced.

TAUW have 3 branches (Adana, Gaziantep, Hatay) in the region affected by these earthquakes. Our members are safe but some lost their relatives, friends. We have around 60 scholarship students coming from the affected cities. Some have lost their family members and houses. Some are still praying for their relatives to be rescued. The temperature is below zero, aftershocks continue...

We created an earthquake fund, sent blankets and food to the region on the first day, donated some amount to our students' families and continue to help as much as we could.

Thank you to friends asking how to support, where to donate by mail or by social media . Below you can find our NFA accounts.

Warm Regards,

Dr. Başak Ovacık

CIR, TAUW

Bylaw Amendments: Updated

Each year CFUW members can propose bylaw amendments or other motions for consideration at the AGM or policy sessions. This year, proposals must be received by CFUW by March 30th in order to be considered at the AGM, July 7-9, 2023.

What are member proposals?

Motions of any kind. We usually think of motions discussed at a general meeting as being limited to Resolutions (in CFUW this means motions to establish advocacy policy) and Bylaw amendments. But Members (CFUW Clubs) can submit motions on a variety of topics. As long as they propose action that is within the purposes of CFUW or that addresses how CFUW conducts business (bylaw amendments, amendments to procedure, resolutions, dues motions, nominations*) member proposals can be considered at the AGM or a policy session.

Timeline for Member Proposals and Articles & Bylaws Process for AGM 2023:

March 30, 2023 Deadline to Submit Member Proposed Bylaw Amendments and Member proposals. Forward all motions to CFUW Executive Director at execdir@cfuw-fcfdu.ca and Articles and Bylaws Chair Fiorenza Albert-Howard fiorenza@shaw.ca.

Follow the links for information and forms:

So far, CFUW clubs have raised $12,342 (and counting) for CFUW ISP 2023 Partner, Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan! A final tally will be shared at the end of the fundraising cycle. Thank you for your generosity for the Darakht-E Danesh Library (DDL) Fund!

Not a CFUW delegate to UNCSW67?

You can still participate!

The UN Commission on the Status or Women, UNCSW67, will be held in New York from March 6-17, 2023.

Every year a priority theme as well as a review theme is chosen. This year the priority theme is "innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls". The pandemic severely disrupted education so this year’s focus is particularly apt.

The review theme is “challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls (agreed conclusions of the sixty-second session)”.

Who goes to the UNCSW? Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs), such as CFUW.

Access to the UN headquarters is restricted to those attending in person. However, the parallel events hosted by NGOs will be in-person, hybrid or virtual. Anyone can register for the virtual events! You do NOT need to be a CFUW delegate. To register for the parallel events, you must create an account on the CSW NGO/NY portal here.

There are over 650 events being added to the CSW NGO platform Whova. (Updated link.) When you log into the platform, you will see a tab called Agenda. This is where the sessions are listed.

What about the governmental sessions being held at the UN? You can view these on the UN Web TV, some live, some recorded. No registration is required. Check the listings on UN Web TV.

Mark your calendar:

  • CAMEUS (Canada, Mexico, USA) will be hosting a virtual event on Wednesday, March 15th at 3 pm ET called Digital Education: Lessons Learnt and Innovations Introduced. We will have a speaker from each CAMEUS country. We hope you join us for this event.

Our CFUW parallel event will be in-person on Tuesday, March 7th, Even Odds in Digital Education for Marginalized Women and Girls.

There are many sessions being hosted by our international partners on this theme of digital education and gender equity. Watch for announcements as details become available.

“Education, Work, and Freedom: What can we do for women and girls in Afghanistan” Webinar Co-Hosted by CFUW-Ottawa and CFUW-Belleville

The first GWI Conversation of 2023, organized by the network of GWI-supporting Clubs in Canada and co-hosted by CFUW-Ottawa and CFUW-Belleville, was held on Wednesday, January 25th. This session explored the topic of “Education, Work, and Freedom: What can we do for women and girls in Afghanistan”. Over 170 participants worldwide attended this event, with the assistance of Graduate Women International.

The Conversation was opened by Fawzia Koofi, courageous and long-time Afghan women’s rights activist, past Deputy Speaker of the Afghan Parliament, and one of four women on the 42-member Afghan and Taliban Peace and Negotiation Team. Koofi provided attendees with a detailed description of life in Afghanistan before and after the Taliban took over in August 2021 and highlighted the very serious problems now facing women and girls – problems that only continue to worsen with each passing month.

Her presentation was followed by breakout group discussions on what more we can do to advocate for and support women and girls in Afghanistan. Actions suggested fall into the following categories: 1) International Pressure on the Taliban; 2) International Partnerships and Networking; 3) Social Awareness Initiatives; 4) Creation of Accessible Educational Resources, and; 5) Integration of Afghan Refugees into Host Communities.

Click here for a recording of Fawzia Koofi’s presentation.

You can read the full summary report of the session HERE

CFUW St. John’s Speaker:

Linda Souter Award Winner

Allison Bennett

February 14th, 2023

6:00pm Eastern

Zoom link here

Allison Bennett will be our speaker for our February 14, 2023 meeting. She is the recipient of the CFUW Charitable Trust Linda Souter Award, named in honour of Linda Souter, the only member of CFUW who has served both as President of CFUW and of Graduate Women International (then IFUW). The Award is valued at $6000 and is given to a masters or doctoral student studying in the area of the Humanities. Allison has received both her B.A. and M.A in History from MUN, as well as her B.Ed. (Intermediate/Secondary Education). She is currently working on her PhD. In History.

Allison will be speaking about her doctoral research, which examines the nature of British, Australia, and New Zealand servicemen’s sexual encounters with civilian women in First World War Macedonia and the Middle East. She says "These sexual encounters threatened servicemen’s health; their masculine, imperial, and military identity; challenged social mores; and jeopardized the future of empire." This project uses archival records from England, Australia, and New Zealand, and analyses the intersection of gender, sexuality, race and racism, medicine and disease, and empire.
