President’s Message

Winifred Florence Haynes, Nurse

Reflections on Black History Month - “Ours to tell”

For many, Black History month is a welcomed institutional event and also a time of highly personal reflection. Of special interest are the dazzling cultural events and celebration of black achievements. February is a month when the stories of well known black heroes are retold and unknown change makers are introduced. The soaring inspiration of black music and spoken word provides a much needed injection of energy to address the disturbing structural inequalities that seem unshakable.

My husband and I attended the historical inauguration of Barack Obama. We have also visited Robben Island in South Africa, seeing Nelson Mandela’s cell and walking down the “road to freedom.” As much as these were monumental experiences, one of the most motivating heroes in my life is my mother, the late Winifred Florence Haynes. She and my father immigrated to Canada from the Caribbean in the 1950’s. She met every obstacle in her life with a soul of grace, courage and fortitude. In 1961 she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in the United States. This was not a “racialized people” friendly era. My parents’ legacy of perseverance has been and continues to be such an inspirational life-shaping gift.

History, as traditionally presented often excludes the experiences of many and doesn’t generally include herstory. Despite these limitations, historical knowledge is essential in understanding today’s intractable challenges and embracing new opportunities. Often, it is the response to historical events that creates the resolve and motivation for change, and Black History month creates a space for important dialogue and new understanding. Three generations after my parents, I see the limitless potential of my granddaughters. Black Joy and Black History is made fresh daily.

February 16, 2023 National Meet & Greet

Watch a recording of the event here!

Passcode: F9TJ5Ck#

Powerpoint from the event.

A wonderful meet and greet was held with 113 attendees participating. It was great to meet and hear from Jamie Beagan (ED), Paige Inglis (Advocacy Coordinator) and Elizabeth Malcolm (Member Engagement Coordinator). A toast was raised to the national staff team and all they do to give CFUW a national presence. Board members, the RD chair and RDs were also introduced during the event. The evening included a surprise birthday toast to Jane Kramer.

There was an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. Here are responses to topics raised.

  • If you need access to the 2022-2023 Directory please contact Elizabeth.

  • Resolutions will be available to the clubs on March 10th and club response is due on April 24th. The resolutions committee will try to get the resolutions out earlier than scheduled to accommodate clubs who are having their resolutions meetings during March club meetings.

  • Changes are coming to make the national website and the club database more user friendly.

  • One of the suggestions that came up during the evening is the potential for more clubs to participate in the national "coldest night of the year" (CNOY) youth homelessness campaign.

CFUW on Parliament Hill: Petition e-4185 on CFUW Resolution on Strengthening Bail Laws to Protect Victims of IPV

Tuesday, February 14, 2023

Watch a short video of the presentation here!

We can make a difference when CFUW clubs communicate and work together. Recently Jackie Street UWC North York and Nancy Pigden CFUW Orillia travelled to Ottawa to witness Adam Chambers, Conservative Member of Parliament for Simcoe North, read Petition e-4185 in the House of Commons.

This journey began when Jackie Street was appalled when she read how our Justice System despite 2019 amendments to the bail provisions, was continuing to fail many Intimate Partner Victims (IPV) by letting repeat offenders out on bail enabling them to terrorize, assault and even kill their victims or drive them to suicide. This motivated Jackie to do an in-depth study of IPV and propose a Resolution that would close loopholes and strengthen the bail laws so victims of IPV would be better protected.

The proposal by the Gender-Based Violence Committee of UWC North York was accepted by CFUW.

A detailed Resolution was submitted to CFUW and after receiving valuable input from CFUW clubs across Canada, the Resolution was rewritten and passed unanimously at the August 2022 AGM meeting. It became a CFUW National Resolution.

CFUW Orillia Advocacy Committee decided in the Fall of 2022 to focus on the issue of Gender Based Violence.

Karen Baldock (President CFUW Orillia) and Nancy Pigden (Advocacy Chair) contacted Adam Chamber’s office. The well-researched information for the Resolution was presented. The importance of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women was also discussed. Adam offered the idea of the

e-petition. The online petition went live on November 8 and by December 8 when it closed there were 972 signatures from across Canada. The signing of the petition was a collective effort from members from CFUW.

Nancy and Jackie went to Ottawa. Paige Inglis (National Advocacy Coordinator CFUW-FCFDU) and Elizabeth Malcolm (Membership Engagement Coordinator CFUW-FCFDU) all met at the Centennial Flame on Parliament Hill. Kyla Canzanese, Legislative Assistant, escorted the group to the West Block for a tour of the new building. Security was evident. The group met Adam Chambers before the presentation of the petition. It was an exciting moment when the petition was read aloud in the House of Commons.

There is further advocacy that needs to be done to draw attention to the issue of Gender Based Violence.

Please read further for some examples.

  1. Adoption of Clare’s Law in Ontario and other provinces which allows intimate partners to find out if their partner has a history of abusive behaviour. This law originated in the UK after Clare Wood was murdered by her intimate partner in 2009 and has now been adopted in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Newfoundland/Labrador. A petition called Justice for Bobbi: Adopt Clare’s Law in Ontario already has 43,000 signatures (Bobbi Nelson committed suicide after being a victim of domestic violence.)

  2. Advocacy for adequate funding for mandatory programs that successfully reduce offenders of IPV from reoffending.

  3. Supporting programs such as White Ribbon, a movement of men and boys to end violence against women and children.

  4. Educating ourselves and others about important resources e.g. “Do you know a Woman Who is Being Abused?” A legal rights handbook CLEO (Community Legal Education Ontario) and “Programming Responses for Intimate Partner Violence.”

By sharing ideas among CFUW clubs we can make a difference when we communicate and work together.

Celebrating Success! International Day of Women and Girls in Science Event

The Canada GWI club and GWI hosted a very effective International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th. GWI has provided a review (click here) and posted the recording online (click here).

In our segment, we revealed statistics showing the under-representation of women in STEM in Canada, celebrated CFUW members who are scientists, and ended with a “remarkable” initiative that began in 1989 at the local club level with the CFUW Ajax-Pickering club, spreading later to Guelph and Lethbridge. Eventually, it outgrew its origins and became a charitable organization.Congratulations to the clubs who launched and promoted this program.

“Scientists in School STEM Kindergarten to Grade 8 enrichment workshops have shifted from being only available across southern Alberta and Ontario, to now being inclusive for any interested elementary school classroom across Canada. The COVID-19 innovation of creating a Virtual Workshop model (made rich and investigative by pre-shipping mini topic-curated materials bags, and highly interactive with the visiting STEM role models) addressed a challenge our charity had always had for scaling sustainably. On-Site workshops are being relaunched in prior service areas as resources allow.” Cindy Adams, ED, Scientists in School
