UN Commission on the Status of Women: CFUW Delegation Update
The sixty-sixth session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 14 to 25 March 2022 to address the theme of "Achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes,".

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-person participation in UN forums for NGOs and civil society representatives is still under review for the 2022 year. As such, it is still unknown if the UN Commission on Status of Women will be in-person or virtual. We will update CFUW members on the CSW's format once it becomes available and will begin the delegate application process once a decision from UN officials is made. Thank you for your patience.

The CFUW, Kanata Chapter, is proud to present a conversation between Elizabeth Hay and Alan Neal on January 25th, 2022 at 7:00PM EST on Zoom

Enjoy a warm and spirited dialogue with two engaging Canadians who share a passion for excellence in their professions.

The discussion will begin with Elizabeth Hay’s memoir All Things Consoled about the emotionally charged events surrounding the last few years of her parents’ lives; but you can expect much more. During recent decades, Alan’s and Elizabeth’s career paths have crossed periodically, so they share insights and experiences that bring a personal flavour to this online rendezvous. Both are accomplished writers and speakers.

Elizabeth Hay is the winner of the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize and a best-selling author.
All Things Consoled, her first book of non-fiction, was shortlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize and the winner of the 2018 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction. Formerly a radio broadcaster, she spent a number of years in Mexico and New York City before returning to Canada. She lives in Ottawa.

Alan Neal is the host of "All in a Day", the top-rated drive-home show in Ottawa. You can hear him weekday afternoons from 3-6 on 91.5 FM in Ottawa or on cbc.ca/ottawa. He considers himself a massive fan of Elizabeth Hay, having interviewed her about her works His Whole Life, Alone in the Classroom and All Things Consoled.

Tickets are $20.00 each.

Funds raised from ticket sales will go toward the CFUW - Kanata Scholarship Trust.

Signed copies of Elizabeth Hay's books will also be available in time for Christmas. Perfect Books has kindly offered to donate the profit from these sales to the Scholarship Trust. (http://perfectbooks.ca/wp/)
CFUW Orillia Makes the Orillia Matters News!
It is an article from the Orillia Matters, a local online newspaper, about CFUW Orillia and their advocacy efforts regarding the Single-Use Plastics resolution.

Group challenging members to find alternatives to plastics that are discarded and where possible replacing items with products that are more environmentally friendly

The Orillia chapter of the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has launched their 2021-22 Advocacy Campaign with a challenge to their members asking them to reduce single-use plastics in their everyday lives.
Many know the club for the successful annual Homes Tour that provides scholarships for local students or for the interesting and informative speakers at monthly meetings.

However, advocacy concerning current issues is also an important endeavour for the club and this year, highlighting single use plastics, reducing their use, and finding alternatives is of primary importance.  Although plastics are handy, they are also polluting our lands and waterways, piling up in waste sites, and harming wildlife.

CFUW Orillia is challenging their members to make changes, even one step at a time by finding alternatives to plastics that are discarded and where possible replacing items with products that are more environmentally friendly. The club members will be issued a new challenge every month and will track their progress.

In May, at the annual banquet celebration, lucky winners will receive prizes from Bubbles by Beverley and The Refillery District, local businesses that are supporting the initiative.

The goal is that the challenge will result in a permanent awareness of protecting our precious environment and leaving a cleaner and more sustainable planet for generations to come.

CFUW Orillia invites everyone to join us in this effort. Let’s make a difference!

Ungendering Technology: Women Retooling the Masculine Sphere - Tuesday, January 11 at 6:00 pm EST
Please join CFUW St. John's for Dr. Carol Haddad's talk "Ungendering Technology; Women Retooling the Masculine Sphere". This account of women's empowerment takes place, Tuesday, January 11 at 6:00 pm Eastern Time (7:30 pm in NL).
Dr. Carol J. Haddad, a member of CFUW St. John’s, will present research findings from her book on women’s mastery of technologies commonly associated with men.  Five original, cross-national case studies will be mentioned, but the emphasis will be on the hand building of a wooden dragon boat by breast cancer survivors in St. John’s, NL.  A major contribution of this study is the multidisciplinary analytical framework used to explain women’s motivation to engage with non-traditional technologies, the role of peer and political support in encouraging persistence, and informal as well as formal knowledge and skill acquisition. Above all, it is a story of women's empowerment - individually and collectively.

Carol is a Professor Emerita of Technology Studies and Women’s Studies at Eastern Michigan University.  Although her first trip to Newfoundland and Labrador was in 1982, her employment was at academic and research institutions in the USA.  Throughout her 36-year career, she collaborated with colleagues in Canada, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Japan on applied research projects, and authored numerous papers and two books.
