A Special Happy Birthday

Photo: Marg Chambers receiving the Sage Award from past CFUW President, Grace Hollett in 2019.

On December 26th, Marg Chambers will turn 102 years old. Marg recently moved to a nursing home, but maintains her wit! Marg is a recipient in 2019 of CFUW's Sage Award and has been a member of CFUW for 73 continuous years (CFUW Sudbury has only been in existence for 74 years!). Marg may be one of CFUW's oldest and longest members.

Happiest of birthdays to Marg!
Deadline approaching!

Application for CFUW’s Board-Approved Delegation to the
67th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW)

March 6-17, 2023

Participating in UNCSW is the primary opportunity for CFUW to contribute to global dialogue regarding the status of women within the United Nations framework.  It is also provides a platform for meeting with our international partners and an opportunity to influence domestic policy as Federal Ministers are in attendance at the session. Read CFUW's UNCSW67 written statement.

The sixty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place from 6-17 March 2023 and will consider the priority theme of “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.” The session will also review the agreed conclusions of the sixty-second session, “Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls” . This year the member state sessions at the UN will be “in person” with the UN Women NGO parallel sessions, hybrid.

CFUW will be attending in person as well as hosting an in-person parallel event during the first week of CSW March 6-10 (most delegates will choose to arrive the weekend before.) It is exciting to be able to return to the United Nations again and an opportunity that we wish all our members could experience. However, even if you are unable to attend in person, all NGO UN Women virtual parallel events are open to the public. You do not need to be a CFUW delegate to participate. CFUW Board approved delegates will have special access to UN Headquarters during UNCSW and the formal UN member state proceedings.

Travel costs have increased since the last in-person CSW in 2019. Hotels near the UN start at $225 US (double occupancy). If you are planning to attend this year, we would suggest that you consider sharing the cost of accommodations. CFUW has secured a block of rooms for your consideration.

Application Deadline: January 03, 2023

February 11th - International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly declared February 11th as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The day is celebrated around the world as a time to promote full and equal access to, and participation in, science for women and girls.

Calling all CFUW members in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics - including teachers who taught in these fields. Please let us know if you are a “scientist” or if you work or worked in any of the STEM areas.  We are currently in the process of creating a virtual event in conjunction with GWI to highlight this day.
Please email National Advocacy Coordinator, Paige Inglis (advocacy@cfuw-fcfdu.ca), or VP International Relations, Barbara DuMoulin, (barbdumoulin@gmail.com).

Let us know your name, your club, what field you specialized in and any other details you would like to share!

You are invited to join a NEW National Study Group about
The State of Canada's Health Care System

On November 24, twenty five CFUW Members from across Canada met to discuss the roiling state of the Health Care System in Canada and decided to form a National Study Group.  This group will look at staff and infrastructure related to Urgent care, primary care, neonatal care, pediatric care, surgical care, specialist care (OBGYN, midwives, neurological, renal, cardiac, cancer, etc), intensive care, palliative care, mental health care and addiction services but DOES NOT INCLUDE staff and infrastructure related to Long term care, community care, home care.  The latter is the purview of the other National Study Group on Long Term Care and Elder Rights.

We talked about the patterns we see in the Health Care system, both the similarities across provinces and the differences between provinces.  We talked about the complexity of the system and what factors contributed to that complexity.  We shared related CFUW policies. In Breakouts we shared our stories and experiences, discussed factors contributing to the mess, and the gaps we see. There is more, much more to talk about - and do.

The group decided that they wanted to form a Study Group and hold another Think Tank in six months or earlier to bring more members into the circle.  There are many members in CFUW who have experience with the health care system and could be valuable assets to the discussion.

A small group will meet in early January to plan the path ahead.  The VP Education, Kathy Wosnick (kwosnick@rogers.com) and the VP Advocacy, Heather Oxman,(oxman1852@gmail.com)  will participate in that discussion.  If YOU wish to be part of that discussion, please notify either of us prior to January 5, 2023.

Notice of
National Office Holiday Closure:

Please be advised that the CFUW National Office will be closed on December 22nd and re-open January 5th for the holiday season.

Darakht-e Danesh Library -
Canadian Women 4 Women in Afghanistan

Following up from the Ontario Council December Newsletter, UN Agency Observer, Sandy Thomson. on the Afghanistan and the important work of CW4WA.

Please click here to download UN Women's Gender Alert No. 2: Women's rights in Afghanistan one year after the Taliban take-over. Their analysis has found that the Taliban has not changed its position on women's rights and that women are systematically excluded from public and political life, and restricted in their access to education, employment, justice and health services. CW4WA, through their Technology for Education program, are providing Afghans with access to knowledge and information for learning and teaching, despite the restrictions that are currently in place. DD Academi is their online learning platform and consists of three tools.

  1. The Darakht-e Danesh digital library (DDL) - a curated collection of over 6,000 educational resources in Afghan languages
  2. DD courses - an online platform of open courses, including those from accredited educational institutions, in Afghan languages
  3. DD classroom - a video app for teaching and learning, available for teachers and instructors teaching at any level, in Afghanistan or elsewhere

According to CW4WA, the DDL has been an educational lifeline for Afghan girls, since the Taliban took over.

If your club and/or members are looking for an international cause to fund and support, please consider a donation to this very worthy international cause. FYI, CW4WA has been a partner of CFUW since 2005.

For fundraising tracking purposes, Club donations should be sent to the CFUW National Office (815 St. Laurent Blvd, Unit 230 Ottawa, ON K1K 3A7) with International Service Project in the cheque memo.

Individual donations can be made directly on the Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan website by clicking on the DONATE button, then selecting "DD Library" from the Donate To drop-down menu. Please indicate your CFUW club name in the dedication.

Thank you.
