Saudi Arabia to study the use of desalinated water in agriculture

  • Saudi Arabia to study the use of desalinated water in agriculture

About the entity

Abdulrahman Al-Fadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia, announced a project in early December to study the feasibility of using desalinated water in the Kingdom’s agriculture sector.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, this project is part of the ministry’s effort to find new water sources to reinforce the growth of Saudi’s agricultural sector. Desalinated water will contribute to balancing between agricultural development and water security, in light of the scarcity of non-renewable water from natural resources in the Kingdom.

The project aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the feasibility of using desalinated seawater in agriculture from the economic, technical and environmental aspects, while benefiting from global experiences, and identifying appropriate crops and cultivation and irrigation systems.
