Even in Death

Rate this book

Where do we stand when the abyss looks back at us?

Where do we live when life hides things from us?

How do we respond when the shadow speaks to us?

Death, death brought me back to my childhood home, my parents’ estate deep into the English countryside… and I’m now the owner of it all.

But this house comes with a secret, one that I am part of and one that I am unknowingly keeping. Yet this secret has a voice, a voice that comes from a shadow, a shadow that crawls over your skin, brushes over your lips, whispers in your ear and brings forth an unnatural depravity.

It knows me more than I know myself… it knows all the things I have forgotten. And when the shadow comes for me… I have no choice but to remember it all.

I want to remember it all.

What do we do when the abyss swallows us?

**** Review coming soon****

Finally, I found my 5-star read of this year! Gosh, I never thought I could ever find it...wtf I was doing with my life, why didn't I read this book earlier? It blew my entire world away with only one and a half days! The emotions are so raw...the depravity is so intensely perfect...I lost my words!

******************************************************************************

I want to read a ghost love story for a long time but never know that the opportunity to read it will come to me this way. Even in Death is my first book by Lilith Roman, and now I'm in love with her writing! The book gripped me from the start only...it revolves mainly around mental health issues more than horror elements, and even though there are horror elements, you can feel its psychological effects more. Zahara ( our FMC) is a complex character. She went through a lot in her short 31 years of life. I instantly connect to her character, I think many can connect to her. The spicy scenes are not much here but however it was, it was damn dirty and delicious.. especially the pool house scene * winks*. I'm refraining from saying anything for our MMC because it will give away major spoilers. I suggest you to go into the story blindly, it will surprise you in many ways. The rawness of everything will hit you instantly, it hits close to home. The emotions it will pull out of you are the major role-playing in this book...they can be ugly and pretty both.
I suggest you to check the triggers before proceeding into this story. As I say, you will find many horror elements here but the psychological part ( mental health issue) dominates the story most, it can be very triggering to some, so proceed with caution. :)
Many will ask if it's a HEA?... I could say somewhat yes! it has an alternative HEA.
but what is this alternative HEA is...you have to read the book to find it out now ;)

I urge you to read it, it's a dark romance but a different type of dark...something very different from your usual dark romance reading, but it will leave you wanting more! I surely want more of it! More Of Zahara and ......😉. our MMC is really swoon-worthy🙈, after reading it I defiantly want to date-love-fuck a ghost hehe.

Lilith Roman is one of the best discover of my 2021.
So when she shared the news about this story i was excited but unsure, because this is not my genre.
Yet each teaser made me so curious...
Moreover I found myself in need to read something different so I decided to give it a try.

THE BEST DECISION I EVER MADE!!

I won’t give you details about the book because it's a 10 chapters book so it would ruin the joy to dive into a new story, the mistery of it.

I'm just gonna tell you this...

Even in Death is not like I thought it would have been at all.

It has all the spooky vibes but it's also so damn emotional.

Behind the paranormal element, that Lilith perfectly mixed with the erotic part and the suspenseful one, there's a beautiful heartbreaking love story.

ONE I WON’T EVER FORGET.

It left me crying, because I felt all those powerful emotions like they were my own.
I felt that overwhelming love.
And I wish i could share with you the quotes that end the book because they sum up beautifully this story 🖤🖤

Once again Lilith surprised me with her talent and i'm looking forward to whatever she gonna writes next 🤩

‼️ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ‼️

Well this was different and with just the perfect theme for Halloween weekend 😬

My first read by this author but certainly won’t be the last. Her writing style is very captivating and has a dark vibe to it which I love.

This book is a short novella , so I would recommend to go in blind for that element of surprise and mystery, you won’t regret it😏.

This book made me ugly cry.
This beautiful horror novella really took me by surprise. The imagery and description in this book made me feel like I was there.
This story gripped my attention from the beginning, I could put this book down once I started and what a journey it was.
I understood this book on a very personal level, it literally spoke to my soul and I recommend this for anyone who has ever lost anyone in their life who they loved and lost.

«Non c’è niente lì, Zahara…» si ripeteva la donna in un lieve sussurro, probabilmente la mente le stava solo giocando un brutto scherzo.

Allora contro chi stava urlando?

oh my god. I am an absolute wreck and I feel like I'm merely a shell of a human being.
HOW did something so short pack such a punch.

This was tragic. Atmospheric and harrowing. Reading the beginning of this felt like I was wading in mud, but as the story went on and the mystery unfolds? When the fog clears and the climax crashes into you? When you learn what happened in the past alongside Zahara? My heart shattered. This story creeps up on you so slowly, unwittingly surrounding you, until all of a sudden you're fully submerged.

I had to go hold my fiancé and sob into his shirt for a healthy chunk of time considering how hard this hit me.

I loved this so much. It's a little disjointed but still so so beautiful.

**Note: ghost sex, sleep paralysis sex, suicide, alternative HEA.

This was my first read of this author and it won’t be the last! I really enjoyed how captivating her writing was… it was so hard to stop reading even if it was disturbing at moments👁👄👁

This novella is really dark and deals with heavy heavy topics, please check out the trigger warning before picking this one up! The MC goes back to this huge mansion she grew up in after her parent’s death. She needs to take care of their belongings before selling the mansion but when she goes there… she’s getting haunted by this shadow.. or more likely a ghost?

As the story progress, you notice that our MC is very unreliable since she doesn’t remember everything that happened to her in this mansion but lord when you finally find who that ghost is and why she’s being haunted?? It gets sad and heartbreaking… i never thought this dark novella would be heart wrenching.

I really enjoyed it despite being super dark and I feel like this book is super perfect for fall spooky vibes!

Trigger warnings: grief, death of a loved one, suicide, dub-con, non-con.

"Is it an ending if it turns into a beginning?"

This was something completely different than her debut novel.
She nailed it pretty heavily. I have only one problem with it, it was damn short.

So not expected and totally different from a spooky ghost story I thought it would be.

This is something dark that's calling to be read.
It was so exquisite and so painful to read.
Heartbreakingly beautiful.

I'm calling you all to find it... and to read it... Forever!

Even in death popped my ghost dick cherry and I'm kind of wondering why I held onto it for so long.

The story follows Zahara as she returns to her childhood home after her parents deaths. She starts having nightmares/dreams.... but are they? They always involve this one mysterious man.

"Who is he.... why is he here.... and more importantly, whose blood is that?"

This novella is the perfect balance of story and steam. It has the mystery, the darker elements and the backdrop that had me devouring this baby like a squirrel does nuts.

"What you are is mine... and I will chase you, I will make you believe you hate me, I will find you, and when I do.... I'll give it all to you."

If you like your pnr and your romance a lil dark then add this to your shelf.

description

Lilith Roman composes a completely new, exquisite masterpiece with her lyrical writing, the dark melodies steadily building up to a crescendo of a bone-chilling mystery, a love that knows no time and shadows that know you better you know your own self.

Five Spooky Stars! ⭐⭐🌟⭐⭐

This story is an anthem for those who know that haunting chill down your spine when you, for a split second, think you saw something that's not there. That tiniest of flickers of things undefinable in your peripheral vision. Like a hint of a shadow, or a quick flash of light.

When I was reading this for the first time, it was storming like crazy outside, and I swear the wind was picking up at the exact moments something unexplainable was going on in the plot. Only added to the unforgettableness of the experience of this book!

Her entire life, Zahara has felt different from the rest of the world in a way she can't quite explain. She arrives to her family's estate she's now the sole owner of, to make her arrangements for the property she doesn't quite feel comfortable being back in. Mallor Hall has a dark presence to it she's unable to shake. Yet that strange energy appears to be something only she can sense.

We are introduced to the enormous grounds of the mansion, that stretch as far as the eye can see, bathed in tones of burnt ochre, burgundy and amber. The building itself is a living, breathing character of the story with secrets of its own, its light somewhat dimmed now that her parents are gone, the space too big, the silence too loud.

We're fed with rich spoonfuls of vivid descriptions of the atmosphere and the surroundings of the estate, an area of storytelling where the author's skills are nearly supernatural. I could feel the scent of October in the air, hear the crunching of leaves beneath my feet, sense the whisperings of the weeping willow by the pond.

"My gaze settles on my favorite tree in the far distance as I answer—the weeping willow with its long branches brushing the surface of the pond in the morning breeze."

Like the house, the willow holds so much memories for Zahara. It's a place of such exquisite beauty, yet so very haunted by something unfathomable. There's a shadow she feels all around Mallor Hall, like a distant memory she has no recollection of, but what clings to her with an embrace of familiarity so sharp it's almost unbearable.

The story touches elements of the paranormal, marries preternatural with darkness so sinful it has the reader blushing crimson! Weaved deep within the fabrics of the otherworldly, lies a love story of such beauty it has you weeping, as well as a desire so animalistic it has you trembling. The eroticism will have you shivering with desire, quenching the thirst for the most decadent of depravities you didn't even know could exist.

The moment all veils are lifted, we are served with the unexpected. It's the absolute best to go in blind to get the full experience of this story. However, be aware of the triggers involved, in case those are something you are uncomfortable with.

Lilith's writing flows so poetically, you'd better prepare to be swept away reading until the wee hours of the morning! The splendor that is Even In Death will stay with you for a long time 🖤 A deeply emotional story about passion so deep it hurts and about love that transcends any obstacles in its way. 🔥✨

I’m experiencing mixed emotions. It’s been several weeks and I still can’t accumulate my thoughts. Was I a huge fan of the story? No. I barely liked the characters, the setting felt a little cliché and I’m not entirely sure I’d recommend it to anyone as their next read.

However, putting the story aside, I appreciated the author’s note. In it, Roman explains the reasoning behind the story and how she only wanted to use the writing process as a form of therapy, not caring too much about the finished product as a result. That in itself added more depth to the story, and - knowing the background - I was strangely intrigued. In my opinion, it definitely made the story a more interesting and gripping read.

“Being scared of yourself is a disturbing thing, especially since you’re the only one that can make it go away.”

I love Lilith Romans style of writing, it feels so effortless to read her descriptions whether it be a place, a random object or one of her many likeable characters.
I thought this novella was going to be similar to the many ghost stories that I’ve read before, you know the freaky monster that hides under the bed scaring the shit out of you for shits and giggles. Oh It most certainly wasn’t, not even close!! It was actually a pretty heartbreaking love story 💔I’m not sure if I’d call it a HEA though as it brought a tear to my eye but I’m so glad you chose to end it the way you did.
My only critique… I could’ve read more spooky bits, Zahara could’ve stayed in the house longer on her own getting “terrorised” 😉 And I would’ve loved a few more chapters but then thats just life in a nut shell isn’t it?! no matter what you do, someone always wants more!

I’m a huge fan of LR after reading her debut novel My Kind of Monster, which is amazing by the way❤️😍 once again I cannot wait to see what you produce next. My new one click author 👏🏼🖤

This was my first book by Lilith and my god...this is a short novella but not sweet. It was a heart-wrenching story which I read in one go! God....yes it is paranormal and I normally don't dive into this genre but I'm so glad that I did.
The story starts with Zahara's parents' death and she had to go back into her childhood home, to take care of all the things back there. But she wasn't expecting to discover the secrets, her secrets while visiting her childhood home which wasn't home for her for so long. The more night she spent there, the more she got to see glimpses of her past which broke her further.
The whole time I felt like I was watching a movie like the whole story was playing before my eyes.👀

Reading anything by Lilith Roman is always a sublime experience, enough that I've already reread her debut novel. She has a way with writing that makes you feel, whether pain or pleasure or relief. In this novella, along with a fascinating plot and characters, you're drawn in with seriously melodic writing. Anyway... Once again Lilith's book hurt me and healed me in one go because evidently we have some sort of kindred life.

Along with the amazing imagery throughout the entire book, there was a constant icy exhilaration of the unknown. I was left guessing until the last few chapters. There is a lot more to this than a typical dark, paranormal, or horror romance. And I know that some will read this book purely for the sex or the unique ghosty aspect and never feel what the author felt writing it or I felt reading it, and that's okay. But hopefully it reaches someone in the way it did me.

The confusing manifestations of trauma were instantly recognisable throughout: the bittersweet sensation of blocking memories out, the odd passage of time, feeling things being taken away from you, the unique suffocation of depression, and the sexual or romantic proclivities that follow for some. At a certain point, I felt a pressure on my chest when reading because I empathised with Zahara's repressed trauma and it felt so horrible, not only for her but for Akira. The start of Chapter 9 nearly had me in tears. I adored the mystery of Akira and found myself wondering when his next appearance would be and what it would reveal.

You will love this whether you can relate to some deeper sensation throughout the text or not, I promise! This review is purely from the viewpoint of my experiences. Also check TWs!

As a side note, there is a scene near the end with the house shaking and lights flashing, and I was reminded of the manor in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher", with the manor being a physical representation of deterioration, whether mental, physical, or mortal.

This book right here, OMG!!! I was not expecting it to be this freaking good. It's been a couple of days since I finished and I still can't stop thinking about it, best novella I have ever read!!!

I'm not really a novella kind of person. I feel like with short stories it's really hard to add depth and plot to it in a way that feels natural and not super rushed. I don't mind the super steamy ones every once in a while, but they usually leave me wanting more. HOWEVER, Lilith just proved this girl wrong. I don't know how she did it, but she added so much history and feelings in such a short amount of pages, It's crazy to me!

The pace was perfect, it wasn't overly steamy where you don't have space to give meaning to it but the few scenes there were, OMG she truly made them count *HOT*. Even in Death had a beginning, middle and the most perfect ending. It did not feel rushed to me (taking in account we are talking about a novella here), I feel like she found the best way to develop everything. And even the ending which I was scared for was the best ever, if it were any different I would be pissed lol.

What I liked the most about this book though was that it made me feel like I was inside a horror movie (an improved one lol), the vibes were just so perfect for this spooky season, it gave me everything I was looking for and so much more because I did not expect to cry my eyes out, so worth it though. The story is just so beautiful, it really hit me deep.

I know I said a lot but at the same time I didn't say much but that's because you really need to go into this book blind, you will not regret it. Lilith's writing is amazing and after two books she already became a 1-click author to me. I can't wait to see what she will come up with next.

I've never felt so caught up in a story like this, it's like time seems and I'm trapped inside this book living everything Zahara was feeling, it's like I could see beyond her eyes... the pain, the despair the desire and the answers she couldn't really see...
It was so  unexpected and different from a story I never thought it would be...

A book that really embraced  my soul and ripped  my heart with an unexplained intensity....  Lilith once again amazed me with her incredible talent !!

If you like PNR - HORROR - DARK - GHOST STORY - ROMANTIC history this book is for you.

As my first, and I think, unic experience of dark/ghost reading, it was awesome, but till the end I thought something different. Lilith Roman jokes me,in a good acceptance, but it's necessary to give us that feelings and sensations. Akira and Zahara aren't the usually characters...something happens them, till the end I stay with the doubt, but the certain things is my heartbroken.

Wow! I’ll admit when I read the blurb and started the book I was intrigued, yet skeptical as to how much I’d like this book, but I’m pleasantly surprised by this romantic horror novella.

Even in Death follows Zahara as she returns to her childhood home after the unfortunate deaths of her parents to settle their estate. Zahara experiences hyper-realistic dreams that have her questioning her sanity.

Overall, I really enjoyed this novella, however; I was confused for almost half of it and still decided to push through because I really liked Zahara’s character. The novella is a great blend of plot and steam. The gothic manor and setting contributed well to the overall plot and mystery. I was not expecting the plot to turn the way it did and I’m so glad I continued reading.

The way the story unfolds is unique. There was suspense, mystery, gasp-inducing twists, and a lot of emotions. Even in Death deals with some intense topics that were intertwined well in the larger plot. At one point, once things were revealed, I couldn’t stop reading.

The ending -- I can’t even begin to explain how I felt when it ended. This sense of speechlessness persists as I can’t form words to express the emotion I felt and still feel. I was not expecting to feel this way after reading this dark PNR novella.

This is the first book I have read in 2023 and I am so happy to say I LOVED it!!!

I want to write the tropes that are in this book but I feel like that kind of spoils the book… I’ll write a minor spoiler review at the very end of this post. If you like to go in blind don't read below the line of asterisk '********'

Even in Death pulled me in right away, Lilith Roman never disappoints!

This book is so full of contradictions for me emotionally, but in a way that kept me interested the whole time. Even in Death had me questioning my own sanity, not knowing what was real or imagined. It kept me on my toes while making me feel lost. I felt like I knew what was going to happen and then the opposite would.

The mental health themes in this book felt incredibly real, not just anxiety or depression but so much more. This book has layers upon layers, it's a book you could reread over and over and get more out of it every time.

While this book is heavy and dark at times the smvt was soooo good! The dubcon of course was perfect!!! Lilith Roman is the queen of dubcon in my opinion, always giving the perfect chase and when he catches her… ooh there's nothing better!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something heavy and smvtty. A dark paranormal romance that may break your heart by the end…

****************
!!Minor and Vague Spoilers!! If you prefer to go in blind do not continue reading.

There is ghost f*king!
Okay this book is heavy and sad at times but it's also a fantastic smvtty romance full of dubcon. I loved it, like I said earlier Lilith Roman is the queen of dubcon!
This was my first time reading about being fvcked by a ghost and damn it was delicious. I would say this book is definitely plot driven but there are quite a few amazing s3x scenes.
The ending was so sad but happy and peaceful at the same time. My heart was broken by the end of this book but the ending was so good. It felt right in the saddest of ways.

This is the second book I read from Lilith and I gotta say she blew me away again! Even in Death is a dark-ish, emotional and poetic paranormal romance written in a single perspective. It's like nothing I've ever read before and I think it’s really fitting for the spooky season.

Zahara returns to her childhood home, a posh countryside estate to clear out the place after her parents’ death. Her best friend Kristina promises to come back a few days later to help her out. When she leaves, Zahara is left alone. 𝘐𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩? In between nightmares, hallucinations and flashbacks, she sees a shadow... she feels him and she connects to him in an unexplainable way. She wants to find out who he is and as she unpacks the different rooms, things slowly start to unveil.

The vivid depiction of the grounds made me feel like I was amongst it. Combined with the detailed description of how Zahara feels, it gave me all the chills and goosebumps. The suspense kept me going, wanting to know the truth. When I got to the end, 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐧, I did not expect that AT ALL. Everything fell into place and I felt a bit emotional to a point where I got teary. This is such a heartbreaking yet beautiful love story between two broken souls.

Wow. What an incredible {hot} ghost story. This book gave me so many feelings. I am literally STILL recovering from the tiny heartbreak this book gave me.
Also I must say, I really love this authors' writing in general. The way she describes things in detail had me thinking I was actually there or watching it on a tv screen.
I LOVED the ending, it was fantastic and I wouldn't have had it any other way. But damn, I was hurting hardcore for Akira there for minute. I almost thought I was going to end this book with a broken heart. I actually got scared. And the ghost sex in this book was pretty steamy let me tell you. You have to be pretty talented to get a reader all hot and bothered explaining a heroine having sex with air. AND IT WAS HOT. HAUNT ME NEXT AKIRA. I WON'T FORGET YOU! I even have a willow tree in my yard, I will summon you there say, midnight October 31st? Is it a date? SEE YOU THERE BABE!

*This was such a fantastic ghost PNR novella. With triggers. Suicide being one of them.*

I am going to read Lilith Roman's backlog now! 5 FREAKING STARS!

This is a paranormal short novella that I devoured this morning. It was definitely not what I was expecting.

Zahara has moved into her childhood home, sorry let me correct that, her childhood ancient country mansion in the middle of nowhere, to clear out after her parents’ death. Only she isn’t alone and a shadow, a spirit, is stalking her, touching her, harassing her, but she has no idea who or why.

This story is addictive and chilling and gave me all the spooky season vibes. It isn’t cliche like horror movies which I liked, we stan a character that turns all the lights on 😂😂😂

What I wasn’t expecting was how emotional the story got. Once we discover the how’s and why’s I couldn’t tear my eyes from the page and I needed to know how it would end.

Once I finished, I just here and couldn’t actually handle the emotion I felt towards Zaraha’s story and that was something I wasn’t expecting from a pnr romance!
