“Baltiysky Dom” is a Russian state theater in the city of St. Petersburg, which received the status of a “theatre-festival”, on the basis of which international forums, master classes, and stage festivals are held annually.
“Baltic House” is an international project that systematically works to strengthen cultural ties between Russia and the countries of the Baltic region, as well as other European states.
The theater building was designed on the site of the left wing of the former “People’s House of Emperor Nicholas II”, which burned down in 1932 (the surviving right wing is now occupied by the Music Hall and Planetarium). The original project, drawn up by the architect N. F. Demkov, was designed in the style of the Leningrad avant-garde.
However, in those years, Stalinist architecture began to come into fashion, and N. F. Demkov, refusing to include “enrichment” in the project, abandoned the project, which was finished by his friend, architect N. A. Miturich, together with V. P. Makashov (a plaque with their names is now in the foyer of the theater). Construction began in 1933 and completed in 1939.
The building has two auditoriums for 124 and 870 seats. Both are equipped with special devices for simultaneous translation.
Festivals “Baltic House”
The founders of the festival are the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Committee for Culture and the Committee for External Relations of the Administration of St. Petersburg, the Interregional Public Organization of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region “Department of STD RF”, the Baltic International Festival Center and the Theater-Festival “Baltic House”.
The festival has been held annually since 1991 in autumn, in the 1-2 decade of October. It is considered one of the most authoritative theater forums in Europe.
The main stage venues are the premises of the theater-festival, which provide ample opportunities for creative experiments. The main program of the festival consists mainly of premiere performances.
During the existence of the festival, more than 100 theaters from 30 countries of the world took part in it.
The Baltic House Festival was awarded the UNESCO Prize.
