Contrées sans culture: ‘Nature’ Across the Anthropological Rift

Abstract

Questo saggio cerca di mettere in luce la differenza tra l’idea “umanista” di natura – in riferimento sia agli individui che alle immaginarie origini delle comunità umane – tra tardo Medioevo e prima modernità, e quella “antropologica” inaugurata a metà Seicento, tra gli altri, dal Leviatano di Hobbes. Lungi dal costituire uno dei termini di un’opposizione binaria la cui componente antonimica sarebbe variamente identificabile come civiltà, cultura, evoluzione, sviluppo, e così via, il concetto umanista incorporava largamente quelli che sarebbero poi divenuti i suoi contrari: conformarsi ai dettami della natura equivaleva ad acquisire ed esercitare quelle abilità comportamentali, morali e sociali che rendevano felice e pacifica l’esistenza collettiva.
