ACT (test)

ACT, originally short for American College Testing, is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It is currently operated by ACT, a ACT (nonprofit organization) of the same name. The ACT covers four areas of academic skills: English language arts, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. It also offers an optional instant writing test. It is accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the United States and more than 225 universities outside the United States. The four core sections of the ACT are scored individually on a scale of 1 to 36, and a composite score (the rounded overall average of the four sections) is also provided. The ACT was first introduced in November 1959 by University of Iowa professor Everett Franklin Lindquist as a competitor to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). The ACT originally consisted of four tests: English, math, social studies, and science. However, in 1989, the social studies test was changed to Reading, which included a social studies subsection, and the science test was renamed the Scientific Reasoning test, which placed more emphasis on problem-solving skills rather than memorization. scientific facts. In February 2005, an additional written test was added to the ACT. In the fall of 2017, computer-based ACTs became available for daily testing in a limited number of U.S. school districts, expected in the fall of 2018. Historical SAT and ACT Participants Since its inception, the ACT has seen a gradual increase in test-taking rates, and in 2012, the ACT surpassed the SAT in test-taking rates for the first time; that year, 1,666,017 students took the ACT and 1,664,479 students took the SAT.

College Admissions (ACT)

The ACT Student Assessment Report on ACT.org provides typical ACT Composite average scores for college and university admissions policies. They caution that "because admissions policies vary from college to college, the range of scores should be considered a rough guideline." Below is a list of average cumulative scores commonly accepted by colleges and universities. Ivy Caliber (schools with acceptance rates typically less than 1:8): 32-36 points.
Very selective (most admitted freshmen are in the top 10% of high school students): 27-31.
Selective (most admitted freshmen are in the top 25% of their high school class): 24–26.
Traditional (most admitted freshmen are in the top 50% of their high school class): 21–23.
Liberal (several freshmen from the lower half of their high school class): 1820.
Open (accepts all high school graduates, limited): 17–20. Any score will likely be accepted.

English

The first part is a 45-minute English language test covering usage/mechanics, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. The 75-question test has five parts: the underlined parts on one side of the page and options for correcting the underlined parts on the other side. Questions specifically focus on usage and mechanics (e.g., commas, apostrophes, (misplaced/dangling) modifiers, colons, fragments, and continuations) and rhetorical skills. Mathematics The second part is a 60-minute, 60-question math test with a typical question distribution of about 14 pre-algebra questions, 10 elementary algebra questions, 9 intermediate algebra questions, 14 plane geometry questions, and 9 questions. on basic algebra. on coordinate geometry and 4 questions on elementary trigonometry. However, the distribution of question topics varies from test to test. The difficulty of the questions generally increases as the number of questions increases. Only calculators are allowed in this section. The calculator requirements are more stringent than those for the SAT since computer algebra systems (such as the TI-89) are not allowed; However, ACT allows the use of paper calculators that make noise (but must be turned off) or have certain "modifications" of the power cords (i.e. disable these features)

Reading

The reading section is a 35-minute test with 40 questions, consisting of four sections, three of which are long and one of which is two short passages of prose. The passages reflect the levels and types of texts typical of a first-year college curriculum. This reading test assesses skills in three general categories: key ideas and details, mastery and structure, and integration of knowledge and ideas. Test questions typically ask students to infer the meaning of texts that explicitly refer to something, or to use reasoning to determine implicit meanings. In particular, the questions ask you to use your circulation and reasoning skills to identify the most important ideas.

The science

The Science test is a 35-minute test consisting of 40 questions. It consists of seven parts, each accompanied by five to seven questions. The passages have three different formats: presentation of data, summary of research, and argumentative positions. Previously, the format was very predictable (i.e. there were always three 'Data Presentation' sections followed by five questions each, and three 'Research Summary' sections of six questions each).

Writing

The optional writing portion, which is always administered at the end of the test, lasts 40 minutes (in September 2015, the test's original 30-minute limit was extended). Although no specific essay structure is required, the essay should respond to a specific prompt; The prompts address broad social issues (unlike the older prompts, which were aimed specifically at teens) and require students to analyze three different points of view and show how their point of view relates to those points of view. The essay does not contribute to the overall score or the English score; it is scored only as a separate writing score and is included in the ELA score. Two trained readers assign each essay a score from 1 to 6 in four different categories.
