California, Oregon and Washington are enduring a fire season of historic proportions. Wildfires this year have left at least 40 people dead and destroyed more than 7,000 structures, scorching more than five million acres across the three states. Air quality has become a large concern, as clouds of ash and smoke spread across the region. While the air in parts of California has greatly improved in recent days, it remains at hazardous levels in areas of Oregon and elsewhere.

The health effects of wildfire smoke are not fully understood, but it has been linked to serious health problems and research suggests that the effects don’t necessarily go away when skies clear.

Here are maps of some of the major fires that are burning across the three states.

California: Glass Fire

The Glass Fire in Napa and Sonoma Counties spread quickly across about 48,440 acres and was 2 percent contained as of Wednesday, with more than 100 structures destroyed.

Officials have ordered evacuations for thousands of people in communities close to the fire, including all of Calistoga, with a population of more than 5,000. The fire demolished the famous Chateau Boswell winery and burned through a community of homes for homeless people. Officials said they were trying to protect the city of Santa Rosa.

California: Zogg Fire

The Zogg Fire in Shasta County was 7 percent contained and had burned about 52,000 acres as of Wednesday morning. The fire has killed three people and destroyed 146 structures, and prompted evacuation orders for more than a thousand people, according to Cal Fire.

The North Complex, which absorbed the Bear Fire, has been burning for over a month after it was sparked by lightning on Aug. 17.

Powerful winds last week caused the fire to spread rapidly, catching civilians living in small mountain communities like Berry Creek off guard, and destroying more than 2,000 structures and homes. It has burned across more than 300,000 acres, though it is now largely contained.

The fire has killed 15 people, according to Cal Fire, and injured two more.

California/Oregon: Slater Fire

Straddling the border between California and Oregon, the Slater Fire started Sept. 7 and eventually merged with the smaller Devil Fire. It has burned through more than 154,000 acres but is now 45 percent contained. Two people died near the town of Happy Camp, Calif., where residents were ordered to evacuate.

The Creek Fire began Sept. 4 in the Sierra National Forest. Over Labor Day weekend, the fire trapped hikers and their dogs in the forest, prompting helicopter rescue missions for more than 350 people.

The fire, which is 44 percent contained, has destroyed hundreds of structures, damaged dozens and threatened thousands more.

California: August Complex

The August Complex was initially 37 fires in the Mendocino National Forest that were started by lightning on Aug. 16. It is now the largest fire in modern California history, overtaking a record set in 2018 in the same part of the state.

The fire has burned about 949,000 acres across seven counties and is 43 percent contained.

California: Bobcat Fire

About 25 miles northeast of Los Angeles, the Bobcat Fire is comparatively smaller than others highlighted here, spread across about 114,000 acres, and is now more than 60 percent contained.

It threatened parts of nearby foothill communities, where evacuation orders were issued. Extremely dry brush in areas with “little to no fire history” fueled the fire, the U.S. Forest Service said.

Oregon: Riverside, Beachie Creek and Lionshead Fires

The Riverside Fire, with a northern perimeter about 30 miles from Portland, forced the evacuation of several communities and has destroyed dozens of residences.

To the south, the Beachie Creek and Lionshead Fires are both roughly 200,000 acres. The Beachie Creek Fire is almost 60 percent contained, while the Lionshead Fire is 35 percent contained. Both have destroyed hundreds of buildings, and five people have died from the Beachie Creek Fire.

Oregon: Almeda Fire

The Almeda Fire forced thousands of people to evacuate with little notice, rapidly burning through residential areas, and leaving several communities largely destroyed.

At least three people have been killed, and about 600 homes and 100 commercial buildings have been damaged or destroyed.

Local authorities have been investigating the cause of the blaze as potential arson. A man was charged with arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangering for allegedly setting a fire that merged with the Almeda Fire.

The fire is now fully contained, state officials said.

In Northern Washington, the Cold Springs Fire has burned around 200,000 acres after starting on Sept. 6. It is mostly contained.

The nearby Pearl Hill Fire, which started a day later, has consumed about a quarter of a million acres. It is also mostly contained.

Both fires spread quickly because of strong winds and low humidity. A 1-year-old was killed in the first few days of the Cold Springs Fire.
