Moral Compass: A Memoir Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

My childhood was a gilded cage, crafted with the belief that I would never need to venture beyond the comforts of home.

Beauty and domestic grace were my destined roles, or so I thought. But at the tender age of ten, tragedy struck: my mother passed away, and my father's battle with alcoholism deepened. Our family's slow descent into chaos became a rapid plunge, leaving me adrift, bouncing between temporary homes and uncertain futures.

In the shadows of a crumbling factory town, I witnessed firsthand the gritty struggle for survival. Friends turned to the neon glow of strip clubs for income; my first love was lured into the underworld of the mob. Amidst this, I grappled with the suffocating grip of clinical depression, a battle that ultimately led me to confront and reshape my reality.

In an era when the world of finance was a fortress of male dominance, I found myself an unlikely warrior at its gates. Haunted by my father's legacy, I was drawn to men who mirrored his struggles, yet I carved a path of my own at Fidelity Investments. There, amidst a sea of college-educated professionals, I stood alone without a degree, yet emerged as a skilled stock analyst.

Love, too, found its way to me, blossoming in the most unexpected of places.

My story is one of transformation, from a life preordained to one passionately earned.

Susan Berger’s A Moral Compass is a fascinating (and sad, hopeful, and ultimately, uplifting) story. A very relatable story to this female who grew up in the 1950’s/60’s, and experienced similar work situations (misogeny, sexism, discrimination and sexual abuse) so prevalent in the 70’s. Her success and perseverance in teaching herself how to maneuver the tough male-dominated world of finance is so impressive. It’s a great, informative read, and very well written. Plus, a sweet love story.

The author describes her rise from a constrained, sexist, and impoverished background to become an unconventional but accepted woman professional in retail finance. Her descriptions evoke J.D. Vance's "Hillbilly Elegy" and Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes".

This memoir recounts the "rags to riches" story told with honesty and humor. A real page-turner dealing with alcoholism, homelessness, depression; an amazing resilience, and ultimately love and success. The author, Susan Berger, depicts a career as a stock analyst and the many changes that occurred over the past 70+ years. I highly recommend it!

I would not read another book she wrote. Putting down Donald Trump at the end of the book did not add anything to her story. I zoned on some of the chapters where she broke her arm patting herself on the back.
