Illness Scenarios - What Next? (Updated June 2023)

Parents and employees are asked to notify the Health Centre for students or Human Resources for employees regarding confirmed COVID-19 diagnoses and/or symptoms of concern.

Confirmed COVID-19 within a household

Symptoms of COVID-19 within a household

Close contact of a confirmed COVID-19 case (outside of the household)

The positive individual must self-isolate until fever-free for 24 hours and additional symptoms have been improving for 24 hours  (or 48 hours with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea).

COVID-19 positive individuals are encouraged to self-isolate separately from their asymptomatic household members, as is age and stage appropriate.

Upon return to campus and when out in public, TPH requires that they wear a well-fitted mask for 10 days following the onset of symptoms or positive test date (whichever came first). They must avoid all non-essential activities where a mask needs to be removed (i.e. playing a wind instrument, high contact sports, swimming). They may of course remove their mask to eat and drink while maintaining as much distance as possible.

Future Testing:

As per public health, individuals should not undergo COVID-19 testing (rapid antigen or molecular) for 30 days following their initial positive test. PCR testing should not be completed for 90 days following a positive test.

Household Members:

Asymptomatic household members may continue with their normal routine. For 10 days following exposure, they are required to self-monitor for symptoms and isolate should any concerns present.

When at school or out in public, TPH requires that they wear a well-fitted mask for 10 days following their last contact with their positive household member. They must avoid all non-essential activities where a mask needs to be removed (i.e. playing a wind instrument, high contact sports, swimming). They may of course remove their mask to eat and drink while maintaining as much distance as possible.

Tier 1 Symptoms:

  • Fever (> 37.8C) and/or chills
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Decrease or loss of taste/smell

One of the above symptoms:

The symptomatic individual must self-isolate until their symptoms have been improving for 24 hours (or 48 hours with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea), whichever is longer in duration.

**It is recommended that they complete a rapid test, if available.

Upon return to campus and when out in public (even if the individual does not test positive for COVID), TPH requires that they wear a well-fitted mask for 10 days following the onset of symptoms. They must avoid all non-essential activities where a mask needs to be removed (i.e. playing a wind instrument, high contact sports, swimming). They may of course remove their mask to eat and drink while maintaining as much distance as possible.

Tier 2 Symptoms:

  • Sore throat
  • Headache
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Runny nose/nasal congestion
  • Muscle aches/joint pain
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pink eye
  • Decreased or no appetite

One of the above symptoms:

Only the symptomatic individual must self-isolate until symptoms have been improving for 24 hours (or 48 hours with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea).

**It is recommended that they complete a rapid test, if available.

Two or more of the above symptoms:

The symptomatic individual must self-isolate until symptoms have been improving for 24 hours (or 48 hours with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea).

**It is recommended that they complete a rapid test, if available.

For 10 days following contact with the positive individual, the close contact must self-monitor for symptoms and wear a well-fitted mask (ideally medical) in all public settings/schools, including during physical activity. During this time, the household member is advised to avoid activities which require them to remove their mask (i.e. playing wind instruments and high-intensity sports).

  • Upon returning to campus, Suzie must wear a well-fitted mask for 10 days from fever onset (even if they have tested negative for COVID-19). See above for further guidance on masking.
  • Suzie’s household does not need to isolate at home. They will self-monitor for symptoms and continue with their normal routine.
