Replenish The Earth Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 24 ratings

In February of the year 303, the Roman emperor Diocletian issued the first in a series of edicts designed to destroy Christianity. Striking at the heart of the church, the measure banned Christian worship and ordered the Roman legions to destroy churches and scriptures. This novel opens on the day the first edict was issued. It follows Linus and Priscilla, two members of a small Christian community, through what church historians would later come to call the Great Persecution. Replenish The Earth is a thriller that takes you into the heart of a Christian community and its heroic resistance to persecution.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In this simply told and competently written novel of the emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians in third century Rome, the author captures both the essence of the faith and the most extreme challenges of living it.

Set during the Great Persecution initiated by Emperor Diocletian in 303 AD, the novel follows the lives of Linus and Priscilla, two members of a small Christian community, as they courageously resist the Roman authorities' attempts to destroy their faith.

From the moment the first edict is issued, the tension is palpable as Linus, a palace scribe who battles his inner shame and regret for his participation in the publishing of the edict, Priscilla, and their fellow believers must navigate the dangers and uncertainties of life under persecution. As Roman legions set out to destroy churches and scriptures, the Christian community is forced to confront difficult choices and make sacrifices in order to preserve their faith.

Philip Bulman's "Replenish the Earth" is an exciting historical fiction that sheds light on the horrid persecution faced by Christians during the expansion of their faith in the Roman Empire. However, rather than a dry recollection of events, Bulman delves deep into the lives of families and characters, each grappling with their own degrees of faith amid the oppressive reign of Emperor Galerius.

Linus is a conflicted protagonist. As a devout Christian and a scribe for the emperor, Linus finds himself torn between his allegiance to his faith and his duties to the empire. Through his eyes, we experience the relentless onslaught against Christianity, from edicts penned by Linus to the ruthless attacks by the Roman authorities. I loved that Bulman also introduces supernatural elements; angels and demons maneuver amidst the chaos simultaneously testing the faith of the Christians.

"Replenish the Earth" stands as a compelling and inspiring tale of resilience in the face of adversity. Bulman's storytelling and rich character development help the story leave a lasting message of the power of faith and community.

"...but I tell you love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you... "(Mt 5:44). This passage is illustrated terribly and beautifully in this book. It is a very tough pill to swallow but this story will forever remain a guide and reminder for me in troubling situations.

I absolutely ADORE historical fiction, and more than that, I love biblical historical fiction. And thankfully, this is a really good piece of biblical historical fiction! "Replenish the Earth" by Philip Michael Bulman is a masterfully told story about the rigorous persecution in the early church and the Christian believers who stood up to authority.

Beyond following the heroism of Linus, a scribe in the Roman palace who holds tight to his faith and his community, we also get glimpses into the spiritual realms. We see the horror of the demonic underworld as they prepare for what they believe will be total domination. We also see the power of the heavenly realm as they prepare for a battle they know they will win. The believers of the terrestrial world aren't always as confident, but it is the power of their faith and their love for each other that will bring them through these dark times.

This is a gem of a book, and I cannot recommend it more strongly. You'll love this story of faith over fear.

Replenish the Earth by Philip Bulman is a captivating historical thriller that plunges readers into the heart of Christian persecution during the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The novel opens on the fateful day in 303 AD when the first edict to destroy Christianity is issued, setting the stage for the Great Persecution. This harrowing period is brought to life through the eyes of Linus, a palace scribe, and Priscilla, members of a small but steadfast Christian community.
Bulman's narrative masterfully blends historical accuracy with gripping storytelling. Linus, torn between his duties to the Roman Empire and his unwavering faith, provides a compelling perspective on the inner conflict faced by early Christians. "I penned the edict, yet my heart rebels," Linus confesses, encapsulating his profound struggle.
The tension escalates as Roman legions systematically destroy churches and scriptures, forcing the Christian community into a precarious existence. Priscilla's resilience and Linus's internal battle are vividly depicted, offering a poignant look at the human spirit's capacity to endure and resist oppression. Bulman's prose is both vivid and evocative, making the reader feel the palpable fear and unyielding hope of the persecuted believers.
What sets Replenish the Earth apart is its exploration of supernatural elements. Angels and demons manoeuvre through the chaos, testing the faith of the protagonists and adding a mystical layer to the historical narrative. This aspect enriches the story, illustrating the spiritual warfare that accompanies the physical struggle.
‘Replenish the Earth’ is a powerful testament to the strength of faith and the resilience of the human spirit. Bulman's meticulous research and rich character development make this a must-read for those interested in the intersection of history and religion. This novel is not just about survival but about the triumph of belief and love in the face of relentless adversity.
