Foreword by Annie Grace - Author of This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol
Are you tired of thinking about drinking?
Hands up if you believe any of the following about drinking alcohol to be true:
- I can’t have fun without alcohol.
- Imagine going to a party without drinking!
- it makes me feel less anxious or depressed;
- Alcohol helps me sleep;
- I can’t relax without it;
- it makes me entertaining to be around;
- it fits the lifestyle of my boozy friends;
- I like the taste of alcohol; it’s cool and sophisticated;
- I’m not confident enough to talk to new people without it;
- it helps me deal with all the problems life throws my way;
- it stops me worrying about how much I’m drinking (ironic, I know).
If you find yourself nodding at even one of these statements, then I know how you feel. I was a heavy daily drinker for over twenty years, I too used to believe that I couldn’t live without alcohol, and that once I’d had a few drinks I was funny to be around (hilarious in fact).
Are you too fed up with the routine of drinking, and want to make a change and improve your life? Or you may simply be curious about how an alcohol-free life might look for you. Could it be better? Happier? Calmer? More peaceful?
Perhaps you’re already on the path to changing your relationship with booze and might have read other ‘sober books’ or taken part in programmes to help you quit. I want you to know you can do the same as me and find complete freedom from alcohol, and that you don’t have to wait for years like I did.
I also want to reassure you that alcohol addiction is never a person’s fault, and that there’s no need to blame yourself for finding it hard to give up. It honestly isn’t as difficult as you might think, and this book will provide the support, tactics and advice you need as you progress on your sober journey.
The Sober Survival Guide is unique in that it is split into two parts. The first is designed to set you up for success and put you in a place where you can find freedom from alcohol and stop drinking if that’s what you want. The first part of the book contains essential information for when you’re in the early stages of controlling your drinking.
The second part serves as a handbook as you move forward into an alcohol-free life and is where this book comes into its own. As you read it you’ll see I’ve used my own experiences and those of the people I’ve worked with to help ensure you’re ready for the challenges, fears, and questions that will come up in the years after quitting drinking. You’ll learn how to handle the work Christmas party without a glass of bubbly in hand, the joys of sober holidays, what to do when you stop drinking but your partner won’t, and a whole lot more. With this part you can dip in and out, picking the chapters that address the problems you’re facing that day or week.
This unique quit alcohol book also shares my own stories and personal accounts that helped me learn (sometimes the hard way), so as well as providing vital tools and tactics it will also leave you with a smile on your face and provide you with a fun and enjoyable read. Part memoir, part sober guide and 100% alcohol free - The Sober Survival Guide is perfect for anyone looking to free themselves from the grip of alcohol.

Review
Simon Chapple's Sober Survival Guide is a refreshing and cheery look at life without alcohol. Sound dreary? It's not! Simon metaphorically takes the reader by the hand and leads them through a journey to freedom from alcohol. As he does, he demolishes pervasive myths about alcohol consumption and cessation, like having to hit bottom or having to call yourself names like "alcoholic". Throughout he continually encourages to reader to be curious, experiment and find out for yourself what a life free of alcohol would be like. Be smart and take him up on it! Val C.
"Simon Chapple leaves no room for excuses. If you are on the fence with your drinking, this is a must read! Simon helped me to see how I have been stuck in cognitive dissonance and now I am armed with the necessary knowledge, self-confidence and power needed to kick this forever. This book provided just the boost I needed to get a divorce from alcohol once and for all." Angela P.

About the author
For over two decades, Simon Chapple was a heavy daily drinker, enduring hangovers, carrying out regretful behaviour, and suffering from a lack of motivation.
Somehow, he still managed to build a successful business and run 15 marathons, but he was never truly happy and didn’t feel like he was anywhere near the best version of himself. He knew something was missing in his life but he couldn’t put his finger on exactly what it was.
Finally, it came to him: his love affair with red wine had become toxic and was no longer serving him in a positive way. Alcohol was controlling his life and he realised he had to claim back the power if he was to find happiness.
At the height of his alcohol addiction Simon was drinking three bottles of red wine a day, with beer or spirits on top. He suffered severe anxiety, low moods and never felt truly fulfilled or happy. Relationships were suffering, his health was a constant worry and he was simply functioning instead of thriving. All the while he was carrying guilt, blame and shame for an addiction he didn't understand or know how to beat.
Exploring how alcohol featured in his life was the first of many steps towards finding the key to unlocking a life of freedom from drinking. By the end of it, he’d found complete peace, happiness, and joy for the first time since he was a child.
Because the changes Simon experienced were so life-changing, it became his mission to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, and more importantly, the benefits an alcohol-free life can bring.
Simon describes the process of quitting alcohol as a 'magical journey' and says that it is not something to be afraid of, instead he encourages people he works with to see it as a lifestyle choice that they are making for themselves in order to become a better and happier person.
Simon says 'The toughest stage in the journey can be when we realise we have a problem with alcohol and don't know what to do about it, once we have found the right strategy, support, tools and tactics we have a plan and can begin the incredible journey of moving forwards towards freedom.'
Simon describes the stages towards sobriety as:
Unawareness or Ignorant Bliss - We are drinking way too much, but don't believe it is a problem.
Awareness - We realise our drinking may be out of control, this leads to an internal conflict and we often don't know what to do for the best.
Education - We begin learning about how to quit drinking and what an alcohol-free life might look like, we start to get motivated and excited about the changes we plan on making and how they will positively impact or life.
Practice - We begin taking what we have learned and putting it into the real world. Sobriety is rather like learning a new skill and we need to practice it in order to change long standing habits and master our new sober lifestyle.
Mastery - This usually comes after 4-6 months alcohol-free, this is the point where we no longer think about drinking and find ourselves in a place of complete freedom, peace and happiness.
Simon is the founder of Be Sober, one of the largest and fastest-growing online ‘quit drinking’ communities in the world. If you haven’t already joined the Be Sober movement you can do so for free online, simply search 'Be Sober'.
Simon is a senior certified alcohol coach for This Naked Mind, founded by Annie Grace author of the bestselling book This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol and The Alcohol Experiment - A 30-Day, Alcohol-Free Challenge to Interrupt Your Habits and Help You Take Control. He has helped thousands of people explore and change their relationship with alcohol for the long term. He’s spoken at live events and appeared on TV and radio on his mission to help educate and inspire people who are wondering what a life without alcohol might look like for them.
His first book, The Sober Survival Guide was released in 2019 and has sold thousands of copies around the world. Simon wrote the book to help anyone who’s concerned about their own relationship with alcohol and thinking about making a change. To do this he drew on his considerable life experience, and the experiences of those he’s helped, in order to provide real-world advice and tactics that can be used to make a positive change.
His second book, How to Quit Alcohol in 50 Days - Stop Drinking & Find Freedom is released in December 2020 and provides readers with a one-chapter a day path to freedom from alcohol.
Simon says 'How to Quit Alcohol in 50 Days is totally different from my first book, I wanted to provide readers with a very clear, yet simple structure to quit drinking. The book holds the readers hand as they move through one chapter a day and gives them everything they need to successfully stop drinking on their own. The book has exercises, questions and reflections for readers to complete and comes with a downloadable workbook.'
Simon's approach is that we should move into sobriety with a sense of excitement and a feeling of joy that we are gaining something special and becoming part of a wonderful community. There is no deprivation, stigma or shame, this is a positive journey of growth and readers should feel empowered that they are making a personal life-choice that allows them to be the authentic version of themselves.
More recently Simon has shared his story about childhood trauma and how this is directly linked to alcoholism and addiction. This is a topic that is addressed in his new book - How to Quit Alcohol in 50 Days.
Simon lives in Surrey in the UK and works with clients all over the world, in between writing he works as an alcohol coach, mainly in group programmes as well as running a successful YouTube channel that shares helpful advice, support, tips and tactics for stopping drinking.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2023A great book, easy to read, outlining all the negative things and reasons why not to drink, and offering great suggestions and encouragement on how and why to give up alcohol completely in my life, showing me that it is a "no-brainer".
I would highly recommend this book to add to the cannon of alcohol "quit lit" book available.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 October 2023I finished this book in one evening and i liked it’s friendly and colloquial style. Reading this book was a bit like having your friend round talking about this stuff over a cup of tea on the sofa. It wasn’t full of science and stats and for this reason, the book is very relatable and will appeal to the masses. I found the constant plugging of Be Sober FB and Annie Grace’s Naked Mind work a tad irritating. Glad I read it and it’ll add to my quit lit sobriety arsenal!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2020I bought this on kindle as it was cheap and anything that I’ve seen Simon do online is motivational and genuine, these are two things I admire in people. I’ve been sober for years now but really wanted to freshen up my mentality and really focus. It’s a well laid out book and is broken down in chapters that are clear to follow and one leads into another. He ducks nothing and is honest about the early struggle of getting sober and staying sober. I’m still working my way through it and have already implemented some of his ideas. Much recommended no matter where you are in your journey.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2019Simon Chapple is the real deal - a normal bloke who became trapped by alcohol and found his way back to vibrancy. He shares his experience in unpretentious language, with stark honesty and great understanding, guiding the reader gently towards a better way. Inspiring.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 May 2021This book is excellent! A refreshing and honest approach to becoming sober and how to continue remaining sober and cope with the inevitable challenges along the way.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2021There are some excellent books about sobriety and redefining your relationship with alcohol, and this particular offering is fine in its way. However, there are better and more comprehensive guides out there. Possibly I would have rated it higher had it ben the first book I'd read on the subject - but it does suffer by comparison. 'This Naked Mind' is, for my money, far better - unfortunately, the first part of Simon Chapple's book is a sort of 'Naked Mind' Lite. It follows the same path, but skims the surface.
Part 2 is, perhaps, the best section as it gives coping stratgies and practical hints for a variety of scenarios.
Not bad..... but not that good either.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 January 2021Having fully embraced Lockdown Part 1, Dry January seemed like a good way to start the new, more hopeful, 2021. This is a short read, perhaps more suited to people who have already given up, but does have some interesting suggestions to help reframe the choice to drink and reasons (or not) to do so.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2019Intelligent and thought provoking read. This is a book written by someone very relatable, someone who has obviously lived the journey and someone who rather than preach about what they did, decided to share the trials and tribulations of the journey and answer the questions we all ask (or should ask) ourselves. On top of this, the many personal experiences/issues shared in the book are clearly explained and where facts are required, genuine research has obviously been done.
This may well become the go to handbook for people starting on this journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical advice on leaving alcohol behind
Simon presents a very easy-to-read, straightforward and heartfelt book full of practical advice and personal experience. He has an infectious enthusiasm for living a sober life, and his book is a wonderful contribution to the growing library of "quit lit" books that are not 12 step oriented. For so long, there has been this idea that one must hit bottom and attend recovery meetings forever in order to end an alcohol addiction. Simon shows that doesn't have to be the case, and that sobriety is an exciting journey. He helps to deconstruct one's beliefs about alcohol and provides simple, practical tips for overcoming challenges on the way to achieving alcohol freedom. I wish I'd had this book a decade ago, when I wanted to get sober but sobriety and the path to sobriety seemed miserable. This is about freedom. Thanks, Simon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
By far the best product I've purchased from Amazon. I've started reading it online before it arrived. It's helping me so much. I'm so happy that it's actually affordable, unlike make recovery books in the market. The author is genuine and isn't out to make high profit off his books.
