The Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) has expanded the installation of crosswalks across the city, totaling 28 new crosswalks in 2021, and will continue to create a safe pedestrian environment with 31 more planned to be installed in 2022.
The SMG carried out various projects to change the paradigm of the previously vehicle-based to a pedestrian-based traffic policy. The installation and expansion of crosswalks are key parts of the project which greatly increase the safety of pedestrians, resulting in great support from citizens based on experience.
The SMG completed installation of 14 pedestrian scrambles (“diagonal crosswalks”) in busy traffic areas, such as at Itaewon Station, in front of Shinsegae Department Store, and near elementary schools, to reduce pedestrians’ inconvenience of having to take a detour while enhancing safe road crossing environment for the mobility impaired. Furthermore, additional crosswalks were installed in disconnected foot passageways to increase convenience.
For continuous expansion of crosswalks, the SMG is expected to continue to swiftly establish plans and designs in 2022 for 31 more crosswalks and scrambles to be additionally installed based on key business districts with high volumes of foot traffic, such as the intersection in Guro Digital Complex 1.
