The Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) will promote ODA projects in the energy sector in cooperation with the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank.

The Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT) announced on Sept. 1 the projects eligible for the 2020 energy industry official development assistance (ODA).

The projects were jointly planned with multilateral development banks such as the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This year’s ODA program in the energy sector will focus on projects in the fields of energy storage systems (ESS) and smart grid.

The KIAT has been working with the World Bank and the IDB since 2018 to promote the global spread of the Korean ODA model.

First, local branches of the World Bank and the IDB discovered projects that can be linked to existing projects. Then, they discussed the scope of the projects and details of the support plan with the KIAT. Finally, the banks proposed project plans to the KIAT.

The projects to be supported this year are the construction of ESSs and geographic information systems (GISs) in Bangladesh, the construction of renewable energy and energy storage systems in Tajikistan, the modernization of Nepal's power grids, the establishment of ESSs for Tanzania's frequency adjustment, the construction of a hybrid mini grid in Lesotho, the establishment of a master plan for an distribution automation system in Honduras, the establishment of ESSs for frequency control in Nicaragua, and the development of home power generation systems in rural areas of Colombia.

Applications will be accepted for one month until Sept. 25. The KIAT plans to select agencies that will carry out these projects within October after conducting an application evaluation.
