This is the summary of my speech at the session "What it takes to work at development sector?" organized by the Development Leaders' Club at Bangladesh University of Professionals back in 2020. I focused on the prospects of a pre-PhD early career researcher. I think most of it is still relevant in the context of Bangladesh (and possibly, in other developing countries with limited research resources). "During my undergrad, found the internship opportunities at organizations and research assistantships from Professors as my initial exposures to professional research arena. Moreover, participating in economics-based students' competition helped me a lot to understand the ecosystem of research arena-how to engage in an academic discourse. I may not be a good enough research professional yet but the experiences and learnings from those gave me the opportunity to meet with some world renowned researchers and work with few of them. Along with my moderate academic results, these activities were my sources of encouragement. Well, research may not offer a very well-paid job like corporations or development implementing professionals at the very beginning of the career [update: well, I think now some of the organisations in the research job market is trying to adjust as well]. However, an understanding of where a person can finish the career may be considered a strong motivating factor to start working as a researcher. One may earn the dignity of becoming an academician/researcher, get rewarded with a decent amount of money after a few years, and produce and share a good amount of knowledge throughout her/his lifetime. If you are lucky enough, some of your own produced knowledge may survive at least for 50-100 years, if not for the lifetime of the Earth. Millions of people may end up leading a good life because of your research. Work on your academic strengths (I wish I could do a bit better!). Build on your programming and communication skills. Research activities in social sciences require those."

🥧 Hot off the press! 🥧 Our paper titled "Resilience of Social Transfer Programs to Large Unexpected Shocks" is now available online in the Journal of Development Studies! Link to the Open access paper: https://lnkd.in/gzUeWyt7 This is co-authored with Dr. Shyamal Chowdhury from the University of Sydney, Dr. Debdulal Mallick from Deakin University, Dr. Kalyani Raghunathan, and Dr. Shahidur Rashid from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

I am pleased to announce that our paper titled "Resilience of Social Transfer Programs to Large Unexpected Shocks" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Development Studies, co-authored with Dr. Shyamal Chowdhury from the University of Sydney, Dr. Debdulal Mallick from Deakin University, Dr. Kalyani Raghunathan, and Dr. Shahidur Rashid from the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). This study examines the impact of a crisis on the delivery and receipt of a large in-kind transfer program in Bangladesh, known as the "Food Friendly Program," in which beneficiaries experienced a substantial decline in receipt during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings carry implications beyond the immediate context, extending to other major shocks, including those induced by climate change. The results have significant policy implications for the design and implementation of transfer programs in developing countries marked by institutional weaknesses. I was an RA at IFPRI-Bangladesh during my pre-doctoral time. I can vouch for the rewarding and supportive work environment that our IFPRI colleagues have been sincerely maintaining for over several decades in this office, both in terms of working with national and international collaborators. I believe the incumbent will have an influence over maintaining and uplifting the environment. As an Associate Research Fellow/Research Fellow, you will get to work with enthusiastic young minds (like my supervisors did when I was there, haha!), experienced professionals/researchers and large government and non-governmental agencies. I would sincerely encourage my PhD economist colleagues to apply!

It's interesting to see how iFarmer is getting engaged in the farming ecosystem of Bangladesh, including production, credit, insurance and extension services!

Attended the Universal Food Forum in the International Trade Center in Washington, DC, organized by Michigan State University. It was a great opportunity to engage with policymakers, donors, academics, development practitioners, farmers and other stakeholders from the US and beyond on the topic of global food security. The final session was particularly insightful, with US Secretary of Agriculture Mr. Thomas Vilsack and Second White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi discussing issues related to global agriculture, climate and environment, and the contribution of the US government in these areas. #UniversalFoodForum #FoodSecurity #GlobalAgriculture #EnvironmentalSustainability

Presented our co-authored study on "social transfer programs in Bangladesh" at the Tata-Cornell Institute Conference 2023 at Cornell University. Received good and useful feedback. This happened to be my first academic conference in the US. I met academicians and fellow Ph.D. students from different universities across the US and beyond. Since this was a conference related to the social science of agriculture, food, environment, and health, the interesting part was to find a bunch of former RAs (and now Ph.D. students or Assistant Professors) and fellow researchers who worked with my known senior colleagues at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). We ended up talking about so many issues of mutual interest.
