- Abstract
Cadmium is a non-biodegradable agent that accumulates in the environment having domonstrated its toxicity in humans, associated to its widely used applications. In humans, cadmium mainly affects target organs such as kidneys, liver and lungs. Cadmium absorption routes are oral, respiratory and dermal, causing hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity neurotoxicity, teratogenicity and reproductive system abnormalities in both male and female subjects. Toxicity produced by this metal is similar to that observed in lead exposure, with the difference of being under-searched. The results of cadmium research conducted in experimental animals have demonstrated its mechanisms of toxicity. In Venezuela, particularly, there is scarce information on cadmium concentrations found in the environment and in humans, the last ones possibly associated to unknown occupational and environmental toxicity. This review describes the most important aspects of this heavy metal toxicity and its effects on human health.
