Securitisation of Migration and Far Right Populist Othering in Scandinavian Countries

  • Chapter
Book cover The Securitisation of Migration in the EU

Abstract

Almost three decades after Klaus von Beyme argued that ‘there is virtually no comparative literature on the topic’ (1988: 14) far-right parties have started drawing considerable attention from scholars. From the mid-1980s onwards, Europe has faced a new phenomenon of radicalisation, which from its first occurrence was difficult to define. Since the first appearance of contemporary far-right parties, various labels, such as ‘extreme right’ (Carter 2005; Ignazi 1996; Hainsworth 2000), ‘right-wing populism’ (Decker 2004), ‘ethno-nationalism’ (Rydgren 2005), ‘anti-immigrant’ (Fennema 1997), ‘radical right’ (Minkenberg 1998; Kitschelt and McGann 1995) and ‘far right’ (Marcus 2000) have been used to describe and classify this new political family.
