Lana Del Rey has said that she thinks people want to see her “go off the rails”.
She made the comments in light of the online criticism she received over questions of her ‘authenticity’ and also her performance on Saturday Night Live. In an interview with The Telegraph the ‘Born To Die’ singer said:
People just want to see me go off the rails. That’s the only reason they’re watching. They just want to see what happens.
In the piece the 25-year-old singer also talked about how she has been sober for eight years after problems with alcohol as a teenager, saying that her drinking got “bad enough that I had to stop.”
She explained: “When I was very young I was sort of floored by the fact that my mother and my father and everyone I knew was going to die one day, and myself too. I had a sort of a philosophical crisis. I couldn’t believe that we were mortal. For some reason that knowledge sort of overshadowed my experience. I was unhappy for some time. I got into a lot of trouble. I used to drink a lot. That was a hard time in my life.”
Talking about her debut album, ‘Born To Die’, which is out on January 30, she said that album is herself “in song form” but also explained that before she hit the big time, record labels thought her music was “creepy”.
She said: “…everyone just thought it was creepy. They thought the images with the music were weird and verging on psychotic. And then, one day, it’s like people decided it wasn’t actually too strange, it was actually too perfect. The fact that it could even be considered pop is a revelation to me.”
