I was lucky to be given access to an advanced copy and was amazed by the vulnerability and frankness each storyteller possessed while sharing their truth.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the wide scope of experiences that were included and how this was further enriched with a colourful range of personalities and voices.
Medicine is about health and healing, but I found myself surprised at how multi-faceted the field really is, and I appreciated the detail in which certain professional situations were described. I was able to develop a deeper understanding of the complexity and gravity of each decision made not only when dealing with a patient but also with how each woman treats themselves. Especially when having to carry the weight of their individual encounters with sexism, racism, death, and abuse.
We can all relate to the continual cycle of self-doubt expressed in Medicine Women. The need to defend while simultaneously trying to convince yourself, as well as the people around you, that you deserve to be where you are; that the choices you have made and the reasons behind them were not wrong but don’t necessarily have to be right either. That overall, nothing is more important than compassion and authenticity.
Medicine Women is about the complexity of being and a reminder that while we feel alone at times, we are never truly alone.
I found myself reading late into the night, at lunchtime, sharing excerpts with my voice catching and my eyes brimming - You’ll need tissues!
It also left me burning at the blatant and insidious prejudices they face as women in medicine.
Their different perspectives, and writing styles keeps it fresh, and their unvarnished honesty keeps it authentic.
Their stories pricked my heart, and also left me reeling in awe of their tenacity and strength.
This is a book that needs to be read and shared.

One or two have a rant at the difficulties of being a woman in what they perceived as a man's world, but that gives pause for thought rather than alienates the reader.
Some of the contributions are right from the heart, and might bring a tear to the eyes of the empathetic or sympathetic reader.
Anyone, male or female, wanting to become a doctor, would benefit from reading this. Perhaps it would deter a few; better to find out earlier rather than later. Some may be inspired by the doggedness or determination described.
