"Nothing endures but change.”
― Heraclitus

This past biennium has been a period of change for CFUW as we have made the transition to operating as a virtual organization, moved our national premises, and adapted to clubs electing either to support GWI, or not. Changes are continuing even as we prepare for our AGM on the last weekend in August. Shortly, there will be two job openings posted for CFUW: Advocacy Coordinator and Executive Director, so our transition continues …

After 12 years with CFUW, our ED Robin Jackson is leaving the organization as of October 28, 2022. Robin has been an amazing support and resource for CFUW, especially during the pandemic. In the past two years, Robin has often been the only person in the office and she did much of the work facilitating the move, organising the storage and even recruited her partner for the office renovations. In the past two years alone, Robin has been instrumental in the development of our new strategic plan and in investigating opportunities to move us forward as an organization, including obtaining a government grant for pay equity, starting the groundwork for a CFUW charity with a focus on leadership, developing the Young Women’s Online Network and establishing the mentorship pilot project. Understandably, Robin says that she will leave CFUW with a sense of accomplishment!

The Board has established a search committee for the ED position that has already met a few times to begin the search process. We recognize the transition may be challenging but Robin is leaving us at a natural transition as we emerge from the restrictions of the pandemic and at the beginning of a new biennium.

It has been said that CFUW is a good training ground for young women beginning their careers in advocacy and the non-governmental sector. Two years ago, we recruited our Advocacy Coordinator, Charlotte Atkin. True to form, another organisation has recognised Charlotte’s strengths and expertise and she will be leaving us on July 22 to take up a position with an international coalition working to create an international law prohibiting autonomous weapons systems – Stop Killer Robots.  We know that Charlotte will excel there as she did with CFUW and we wish her every success in her new endeavour.

Change and transition can be challenging but can also be invigorating. We will be sorry to say ‘goodbye’ to Robin and Charlotte but we thank them for the support they have given us as we continue on the path to Reconciliation; Revitalization; Renewal – the theme of our 2022 AGM.

CFUW Announces Eileen Olexiuk as Keynote Speaker at the 2022 AGM

CFUW is delighted to announce Eileen Olexiuk as the keynote speaker at our 2022 AGM.

Eileen Olexiuk, a retired diplomat, served in Afghanistan from 2002 – 2005.  She was the first Canadian diplomat assigned solely to Afghanistan as Political Counsellor.  When the Canadian Embassy was established in August 2003, Ms. Olexiuk became the Deputy Head of Mission and Charge d’affaires.  Her main responsibility was to analyze developments and report to Ottawa on political affairs primarily: democratic development, good governance; security sector reform including de-militarization and disarmament, police, and justice; and Afghanistan’s adherence to international human rights norms.  She traveled extensively throughout the country and continues to maintain contact with activists in Afghanistan.  Previously, Ms. Olexiuk served in Canadian Embassies in Colombia with accreditation to Ecuador, and Greece with analytical responsibilities for the Balkans and Cypress.  Other assignments included responsibilities for Canadian assistance for Reconstruction in the Former Yugoslavia, for Economic and Political Transformation in Russia, and for development in Bangladesh, and the South East Asia region.  After retirement, Ms. Olexiuk worked under contract to provide pre-deployment training to the Canadian Commanders and their headquarters staff destined for Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Eileen’s presentation will touch on transition. Everything seems to be “in transition” these days.  Whether looking at the world at large, as in challenging international relations, or climate change, or war and conflict, everything seems in flux and changing too rapidly for us to fully comprehend.  In Canada as well, rapid changes affecting power politics, growing income inequality, racial disparities, and economic uncertainty can leave us all feeling somewhat vulnerable or at least longing for stability.   “Reconciliation, Revitalization and Renewal” is an appropriate theme to consider when challenging any of the societal problems we currently face.  The challenge must start with dialogue, with listening and sincere respect for differences.

Don’t miss Eileen’s talk on Saturday, August 27 at 12 noon eastern!
