How long does the skin renewal process take?

You know that skin is our largest and forever growing organ. So, it’s not strange to read how it has the possibility to renew itself. It is a repetitive process that is very important and considered as a key to radiant and younger-looking skin. Namely, cells in the outermost layer of skin, known as the epidermis, are constantly replacing themselves.

That’s important because the epidermis provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. In babies, the skin renews itself every 14 days and as we grow older, this process takes more and more days. So, on average, the skin renewal process takes 5-6 weeks

Squalane or squalene in moisturizers and serums?

Every now and then, there are some buzzwords that everyone writes and talks about. Lately, you may have heard about squalane and squalene. The difference is not just in one single “e” but in the whole meaning. Squalene is naturally present in shark liver, olives, and sugarcane, while squalane is present in the skin lipid barriers, preventing moisture loss. That’s why squalane is often used in cosmetics as an emollient and moisturizer.

And speaking of moisturizer, do you know what is the main difference between moisturizer and serum? Well, moisturizer doesn’t penetrate into the epidermis, ie. the outermost layer of skin. Its main benefit is sealing the skin and locking in moisture. On the other hand, serum penetrates deeper into the skin because it has smaller molecules and a higher concentration of active ingredients than a moisturizer.

Also, because of their molecular structure, it is very important to layer your skincare products in the correct order which is: cleanser, antioxidant serum, eye cream, moisturizer, sunscreen. And, FYI, if you read your skincare products contain parabens it means they contain preservatives that guard against mold, fungus, and bacteria growth.

Flawless skin doesn’t like cigarettes…

OK, let’s talk now a little bit about everyday habits that have a huge impact on your skin. You already know that drinking water and having a proper diet can be very useful to your skincare routine, and for your overall health as well. Also, you already know how smoking can do any good for your skin

For example, the toxins found in cigarette smoke damage elastin and collagen. And we start losing collagen in our 20s which leads to wrinkle formation. Losing collagen is a natural and normal aging process of your skin that can be speeded up with UV exposure, pollution, and bad habits like smoking. If you are a smoker, you would probably like to quit smoking since it is a well-known fact that smoking deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients, resulting in a pale or uneven complexion.

Can you eat the chocolate if you have acne?

And for the end of these fun skincare facts, some random trivia information:

  • Chocolate is NOT a well-known culprit for acne
  • Men really need tailored skincare products which are different from products for women because different hormones (male vs. female) have a different impact on the skin.
