Establishment of University
The University of New England was founded by the College of New England, which was established in 1938 as part of the University of Sydney. Following the passage of the University of New England (NSW) 1953 Act, the college became fully independent in 1954 as the University of New England. The university established the School of Education in 1967.
Transition to a network university
The University of New England was reorganized in 1989. The University of New England 1989 Act (NSW) transformed UNE into a network university in many places. It included an Armadale University, which included the former University of New England, and the Armadale College of Advanced Education. and a university in Lismore, including the former North River Advanced College of Education.
The following year, the Orange College of Agriculture Network joined the university. The network also includes the UNE-Coffs Port Center, which offers university courses from the Armidale and Lesmore campuses.
Return to a campus format
In November 1993, the university was re-established by the New South Wales Parliament after the New England Law (NSW) and the South Cross Universities Act 1993 (NSW) were passed by the University of New England. The effect of this law was the abolition of the university network. The University of New England has had only one campus in Armadale since 1994. A new university (South Cross University) was established with landscaping in the ports of Lismore and Café. The Orange Campus merged with the University of Sydney.
The Armadale College of Advanced Education Coalition was completed when the new law was passed. In the same year, the Faculty of Law was established.
Decade 2020
In 2020, the University of New England contracted the pandemic. Earlier this year, the university became a potential site for students and faculty members to conduct viral tests. []] In September of that year, a staff restructuring was announced, with the goal of saving $20 million in annual salary costs and spending the university on 100 positions to prepare for future opportunities.
