Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) refers to the transmission of TV content using Internet Protocol (IP). This differs from traditional broadcasting via satellite or terrestrial. Instead of downloading the mediasources, IPTV allows streaming of the source media continually. As a result, a client media player can begin playing the content (such as TV channels) almost immediately. This is known as streaming media.

IPTV is an internet-based TV service which uses IPTV, which is an Internet protocol. IPTV is extensively used in telecom networks that are subscriber-based and have high-speed access channels to end-user residences via set-top box or various other consumer-premises equipment. IPTV can also be used to provide streaming media across private and corporate networks. The process of standardizing IPTV within the telecoms industry (e.g. European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a highlight.

IPTV services may be classified as live television or live media with or without interactivity. time shifting of media, e.g., catch-up television (replays an episode of a television show that has been broadcast just hours or days back), start-over TV (replays the current program from the beginning) along with videos on demand (VOD) that involves browsing or viewing items in a media catalogue.

Historically, PHTV of IPTV have appeared, including elementary streams[clarification needed] over IP networks, MPEG transport streams over IP networks and a number of proprietary systems. The International Telecommunication Union's focus on IPTV on IPTV approved this official definition:

IPTV is defined as multimedia services such as television/video/audio/text/graphics/data delivered over IP based networks managed to provide the required level of quality of service and experience, security, interactivity and reliability. [1]

Another definition of IPTV in relation to the industry of telecommunications, is the one provided by Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) IPTV Exploratory Group in 2005:

IPTV is defined as the security and reliability of the distribution to viewers of entertainment videos and other related services. This may include Live TV, Video On Demand, and Interactive TV (iTV). They can be provided through an internet-agnostic and packet switched network, that utilizes the IP protocol to transmit audio, video, as well as control signals. In contrast to video over the public Internet, with IPTV deployments, security of the network and performance is tightly controlled.
