The Lakhta Center is an 87-story skyscraper built in the northwestern neighbourhood of Lakhta in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Standing 462 meters tall, it is the tallest building in Russia, the tallest building in Europe, and the sixteenth-tallest building in the world.
It is also the second-tallest structure in Russia and Europe, behind the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, in addition to being the second-tallest twisted building and the northernmost skyscraper in the world.
Objects of the complex
Offices will occupy about 43% of the total area of the building.
Multifunctional auditorium-transformer with a capacity of 494 people. The transformation system based on the spiralift technology allows you to change the spaces of both the hall and the stage in 10-20 minutes.
The scientific and educational center will have an area of 7000 m2.
Planetarium in the form of a ball with a capacity of up to 100 people. The outer diameter is 19 meters. The shell is made of 1223 curved triangular sheets of polished stainless steel. The sky projection is formed by a stellar machine (Japanese projector – Ohira Tech Megastar-IIA), and larger objects, artificial aircraft, visual effects and more are digital, created by a projection system with a resolution of 8K along the meridian, which uses 10 4K laser projectors SONY GTZ280. The total resolution is 48,483,533 pixels.
A panoramic two-level restaurant will open on floors 75-76 of the tower (315 and 319 meters). The restaurant will focus on Russian cuisine.
The observation platform will be located from the 83rd to the 86th floor at an altitude of 360 meters. The telescopes will be equipped with an interactive map of St. Petersburg, which will allow visitors to learn about the sights of the city.
Permanent and temporary exhibition spaces will be located in the southern part of the MFZ. Their area will be 1500 m2, the height of the ceiling is 12 meters. On the northern square of the complex, an open space for art objects, sculptures and installations is expected.
Restaurants and cafes with 1,500 seats will be located on five levels of the MFZ.
The sports complex (4600 m2) will include gyms, a fitness center, health and relaxation centers.
The medical center (2500 m2) includes diagnostic and treatment departments.
Outdoor amphitheater for watching water shows with a capacity of up to 2000 people. The area of the open stage will be 1495 m².
In August 2021, Gazprom, formerly headquartered in Moscow, completed its re-registration process in Saint Petersburg. The new address of the company is at the Lakhta Center Multifunctional Complex.
Design features
Due to the proximity to the Gulf of Finland and weak soils, all foundations of the complex are based on piles. The dimensions of the pile field (1 and 2 stages) – 3480 piles. Of these, 264 piles with a diameter of 2 m – under the tower building, 848 piles with a diameter of 1.2 m – under the MFZ and the arch, 968 piles with a diameter of 0.6 m – under the stylobate and 1400 (diameter 1.2 m) – under the GLC.
The area of all facades of the complex (stages 1 and 2) is over 242,000 m2, including 179,000 m2 at the facilities of the first stage. The total mass of glass on the facade of the tower is 13,000 tons.
Atlantic city, Piterland and its aquapark and Park of the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg are located nearby.
