Helfende Wände

Helping Refugees Find Homes

Helfende Wände is an initiative of Wunderflats and the non-profit organization ProjectTogether. We connect housing providers with individuals affected by conflict, helping them find suitable accommodation in times of need.

Initially launched as a pilot project in response to the crisis in Ukraine, Helfende Wände has helped over 4,700 displaced Ukrainians find temporary homes and now aims to give all refugees a safe haven as they rebuild their lives.

FAQs

What type of documentation will I need to rent a home?

Expand

To keep all users of the platform safe, we ask both those offering their homes and those in need of housing to verify their identity. We will need a form of ID, and we might also ask you for some of the arrival documents, such as a residence permit, or an EU Blue Card.

What happens when I arrive in Germany? Where can I register?

Expand
  • To register your arrival, please go to the nearest reception center or an arrival center. You will need your ID or passport to register, and you will receive an arrival certificate (Ankunftsnachweis), a provisional residence document (Fiktionsbescheinigung) or a certificate indicating the reception facility responsible for you (Anlaufbescheinigung). This document is very important for your next steps in Germany.
  • Once you have the proof of registration (proof of arrival), you can apply for state support for accommodation, care or social benefits.
  • If you need state benefits and don't have a permanent place to stay yet, you will be told where you should live initially.
  • If you do have a permanent place to stay, please register your address with the local registration authority.

You can find more information about your arrival at Germany4Ukraine.de.

Can I apply for a residence permit?

Expand

If you are in Germany because of the war in Ukraine, you can apply for a residence permit. This is a necessary document for obtaining a long-term right of residence in Germany, for receiving social support, and for working in the short term. You can apply at the Foreigners’ Authority via Germany4Ukraine.de.

How much will it cost to rent a home?

Expand

Rental prices are determined by the housing providers who have registered to offer accommodation. Many of them are reducing their rates significantly or offer their homes for free. You can see the rental rates when you search for homes on the platform.

How long will I be able to stay in the rental?

Expand

This depends on the available accommodation. You can see the available rental duration of each listing on the platform. You will only be able to request apartments that are available during your requested move-in and move-out date.
