Abstract: As an important part of university incentive mechanism, the salary and compensation system plays an important role in motivating faculty’s enthusiasm, enhancing work satisfaction, and strengthening the cohesion of a university. This paper reviews the existing research on university compensation system, and examines the compensation system of 11 top universities in the United States with data from the American Association of University Professors(AAUP) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on compensation strategy, salary level, salary composition, salary structure, and payment adjustment. The experience of the top universities in the United States sheds light on how to improve the compensation system of Chinese colleges and universities in accordance to the reform requirement of the "Double World-Class" construction project.
