The Blacksmith’s Market in St. Petersburg

The Blacksmith’s Market (Kuznechny) is a food market in St. Petersburg, one of the first monuments of Soviet architecture.

1922-1927 – architectors: Ovsyannikov Sergey Osipovich, Pronin Arseny Semenovich.

In the 19th century the site belonged to the Vladimir Church and was occupied by woodsheds and warehouses.

The project was developed in the period 1922-1925, construction had been completed by 1927.

The first floor of the building is designed in the form of wide glazed arcades with columns. The central entrance is highlighted by a large arch with four rusticated columns. On the sides are figures of a worker and a peasant (sculptor V. F. Razumovsky). Above the main entrance is a clock tower. A light lantern is located in the ceiling of the central part.

Stone was used in the decoration of the facades.

In 2001, the house was included in the “List of newly discovered objects of historical, scientific, artistic or other cultural value” (2209).

The building is included in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Objects (monuments of history and culture) of the peoples of the Russian Federation as an object of cultural heritage of regional significance (7800724000).

The large-scale building of the market has a single space, inside which there are trade counters. Today, there are more than a hundred trading places with various types of food and agricultural goods.

At the Kuznechny market, preference is given to agricultural producers and farms, including those from the Leningrad and Pskov regions, which ensures the optimal ratio of price and quality of the products offered.
