National Parks in Assam 2021

A good news for the environment comes on 9th June, Wednesday, 2021 as the Assam state forest department has declared the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary as a National Park. With this announcement, Dehing Patkai, there are now 7 National Parks in Assam. As of on 5th June World Environment Day Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, declared Raimona Sanctuary into a national park. Assam has become now the second state in the country to have the highest number of national parks. The newly created national parks in Assam will help to boost conservation efforts and provide fillip to tourism and agriculture sectors.

The Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma said that this was a measure to ensure environmental conservation. The newly declared national park in assam will be another endeavor by the state to protect its rich flora and fauna. Declaring Raimona as a national park, CM said it was a step taken towards the fulfillment of the UN's vision of ecosystem restoration.

The Chief Minister said that this was a landmark step in environmental conservation and the newly declared national park will be another endeavour by the state to protect its rich flora and fauna.

The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 says whenever it appears to the state government that an area, whether within a sanctuary or not, is, by reason of its ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, or zoological association of importance, need to be constituted as a national park for the purpose of protecting, propagating or developing wildlife therein or its environment.

National Parks in Assam 2021 with Districts

1. Kaziranga National Park (কাজিৰঙা ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান) 

The prestigious Kaziranga National Park of India is situated in the north eastern part of the country in the district of Golaghat and Nagoan in the state of Assam. The Kaziranga National Park Covering an approximate area of 430 square kilometres. It has been declared as National Park in 1974. Kaziranga was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique natural environment in the year of 1985.

The major attraction of Kaziranga National Park is it is the host for two third of world’s population of endangered Indian one-horned Rhinoceros and also declared as a Tiger reserve in 2006, holding the highest density of tigers in the world. The park is also a domicile for large breeding inhabitants of Elephants, wild water Buffaloes, Swamp Deer, hog deer, gaur, sambar, Indian Muntjac and many more. It has been declared as a forest reserve in the year of 1908 and Wildlife Sanctuary in the year of 1950.

2. Manas National Park (মানস ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান)

Manas National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is located two districts Bongaigaon & Barpeta in the State of Assam in North-East India, a biodiversity hotspot. Covering an area of 39,100 hectares, it spans the Manas river and is bounded to the north by the forests of Bhutan. The beautiful Manas National Park earlier known as North Kamrup Wildlife Sanctuary and later it was declared a sanctuary on December 01, 1928. It was established as the core of the Manas Tiger Reserve from April 1973 and elevated to the position of a National Park status on 7 September 1990.

Manas National Park is one of the nine tiger reserve sanctuaries in India. In 1985, Manas was declared as World Heritage Site (Natural) by UNESCO for outstanding universal value. Manas was declared as Biosphere Reserve under Man & Biosphere Programme of UNESCO (total area – about 2837 Km2) in 1989. 

Manas is famous for its population of the Wild water buffalo, rare golden langur and the red panda. The park is also home to some of the rare wildlife species including one horned rhinos, leopards, clouded leopards and the amazing black panthers.

3. Nameri National Park (নামেৰি ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান) 

Nameri National Park of India is located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur district of the state of Assam. Total area of the park is about 200 square km. Nameri National Park was set up as a sanctuary in 1985. Nameri wildlife Sanctuary was declared as National Park in the year of 1998. This is the third National Park and the second Tiger reserve of Assam.

Nameri provides a diverse flora and fauna. The most famous white winged wood-duck ( Deo Hanh ) is found here. Besides these other animals found here are Black Bear, many types of deer’s, butterflies, fishes, elephants etc. River Jiyabharali flows down through the Nameri National Park which provides wide vistas for adventure water sports like rafting and angling

4. Orang National Park (ওৰাং ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান) 

Orang National Park, previously called as Rajiv Gandhi National Park is the oldest game reserve of the State of Assam just on the northern bank of river Brahmaputra in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts with an area of 78.81 sq. kms. At present Govt of Assam renamed it as Orang National Park. It was established as a sanctuary in 1985 and declared a National Park on 13 April 1999. It is also known as the mini Kaziranga National Park.

The national park is the home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The tiger population is estimated to be quite large here. It became 49th tiger reserve in India under Project Tiger. The other major animal, the Great Indian One Horned Rhino (Rhinoceros unicornis), Asiatic elephant, hog deer, wild boar. There are migratory birds like The Bengal Florican, Spot-billed Pelican, Black-necked Stork, Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Wooly-necked Stork, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Mallard, Pintail, Pallas's Fishing Eagle etc can be seen here.

5. Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (ডিব্ৰু- চৈখোৱা ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান) 

The Dibru-Saikhowa National Park and the Biosphere Reserve situated in the south bank of the river Brahmaputra in the extreme east of Assam state in India. The park is situated in the district of Dibrugarh and Tinsukia of Assam. The Dibru Saikhowa National Park, spread over an area of 350sq km. 

The park is designated a Biosphere Reserve in July 1997. Dibru-Saikhowa wildlife Sanctuary was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1986 and it was declared as a National park in the year 1999. It is mainly a combination of moist mixed-semi deciduous forest, moist mixed-semi evergreen forest, grassland and canebrakes and is also the largest salix swamp forest in the north east India.

Dibru Saikhowa National Park is a river island national park and one of the 19 biodiversity hotspots in the world. The park is also home to some restricted-range species, such as the White-winged Wood Duck, Bengal Florican, Lesser Adjutant Stork, spotted-billed Pelican, White-bellied Heron, Pallas's Fish Eagle, Swamp Partridge, Jerdon's Babbler, Black-breasted Parrotbill and Striated Grassbird. Marsh Babbler, Swamp Prinia and Yellow Weaver.

Though the park was primarily meant for the conservation of White winged wood duck in its natural habitat, it is also the famous for its bright colored wild horses known as Feral Horses. A total of about 36 species of mammals have so far been recorded in the park, of which 12 are listed in the Scheduled 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972

6. Raimona National Park (ৰাইমনা ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান) 

The 422 square km wildlife habitat in Kokrajhar district adjoins western-most buffer to Manas Tiger Reserve, Raimona in Kokrajhar district has become Assam’s sixth national park on 5th June, 2021, on the occasion of World Environment Day. 

Raimona National Park is famous for Golden Langur, an endemic species which has been named as the mascot of Bodoland region. The national park has a variety of wildlife including tiger, clouded leopard, Golden Langur, Indian gaur, Asian Elephant, spotted deer, wild buffalo and hornbill.

The national park is also known to host over 150 species of butterflies, 170 species of birds, many species of orchids and 380 species of plants.

7. Dehing Patkai National Park (দিহিং - পাটকাই ৰাষ্ট্ৰীয় উদ্যান) 

The Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary also referred to as "Jeypore Rainforest", the only sole Rainforest in Assam and one among India’s last lowland evergreen rainforests. "DEHING PATKAI THE AMAZON OF THE EAST" we can see across Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar districts of Assam and also spreaded till the State of Arunachal Pradesh. 

The Dehing Patkai National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary covered an area of 234.26 sq. kilo metre and belongs to Assam’s wet tropical evergreen forest category. Dehing-Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary got the sanctuary status in the year 2004 and also to be a part of the "Dihing-Patkai Elephant Reserve". On 9 June, 2021 the forest department has declared the Dehing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary as a National Park.

The Dihing Patkai Wildlife Sanctuary has Three main regions. They are --

1. Dirok Rainforest

2. Upper Dihing River and

3. Jeypore Rainforest

The major beauty of the sanctuary is its Orchid diversity with 100 species, where eight species are critically endangered as well as the home of around 30 species of Butterflies and 290 species of Birds. The territory is a living home to an outsized number of Reptiles, Elephants, Tigers, Leopards, Golden cats, Hoolock Gibbons etc.
