I can’t use the mute button with my new Siri remote. Nothing happens when I click the mute button. Have tried with Netflix and Disney+.
I am using my TV with a Bose Solo II as an external speaker.
Anyone else having issue with the mute button?

Have you actually gone to remote settings and actually paired the volume control with the device you want to use?

Programme your remote for volume

If volume control doesn’t work automatically, you can manually programme your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote:
  1. On your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Volume Control.
  2. Select Learn New Device.
  3. Follow the onscreen steps to programme your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote to control volume for your television or receiver.

Thanks for the tips but it did not work. It worked for volume up and down but did not with the mute button. When pressing the mute button nothing happens…just like it is not recognized.

Ok correction. It works now. I had to delete my Bose via IR and set it up again. But what I found not working too is CEC meaning that when I turn off my Apple TV it turns off my TV but when I turn on my Apple TV it does not turn on my TV!

The mute button is finicky. I have to click it about 5 times to get it to mute a Vizio Soundbar. And...it won't easily unmute. After I click on the + volume button 3 times, it finally unmutes, but the soundbar is turned up really loud. The older remote worked better with the volume function.

The new remote is two steps forward. But 4 steps back.

I'm having the same issue and just spent over 1 hour with Apple support today. Have it all documented and waiting for the engineers to reply.

The mute button works for me with Homepods as the default audio output for my ATV 4K. The only bug I have come across is if the Homepods had previously been playing music via (Homepod) Siri then the Mute button sometimes starts the music playing instead of unmuting the ATV output.

Anyone figured this out yet? Bought the new remote today for use with my existing Apple TV 4K and ran into this same issue.

As far as I can tell, mute works fine over HDMI-CEC but not at all over IR. Despite the setup letting you record the mute command from an original remote, which I obviously have done of course…

Unfortunately the old HDMI version implemented on my 10 year old receiver supports neither 4K nor HDMI-ARC. So I have to connect the Apple TV directly to the TV and then an old school optical audio cable to the receiver, and control volume over IR.

One very weird thing is that the LED on the Apple TV itself flashes for each button press on the remote – except for the mute button. And this regardless of whether the remote is set to Auto (which defaults to HDMI-CEC) or recorded IR.

Apple TV has the latest non-beta firmware installed, as of today 14.7. Remote version is specified as 0x0061 which may or may not already include the update supposedly released yesterday. And again, I have recorded the IR command for mute.
