MOSCOW, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The deterioration of Russia-U.S. relations is not in Moscow's interests, Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said Thursday.

"I was invited to evaluate what needs to be done so that our relations don't completely fall into an abyss," Antonov told reporters after a meeting at the committee on international relations of Russia's lower parliament house.

Many people are concerned about the fate of Russia-U.S. ties and consider that both countries bear a special responsibility towards ensuring international security, he said, calling for concrete actions to fight common challenges and threats.

There is no time for confrontation, the ambassador said.

In an unprecedented move, the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled Antonov last week to conduct high-level consultations in Moscow amid worsening Russia-U.S. relations.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that President Vladimir Putin does not plan to meet Antonov.

Moscow-Washington relations hit a new low after a recent U.S. intelligence report accused Russia of meddling in the 2020 U.S. elections with an aim to hurt Joe Biden's campaign. Enditem
