It wouldn't be the first game to feature skins inspired by real world terrorist groups in its multiplayer, CSGO has done so forever.

do people even do research before adding stuff to their game? either that or they are being wilfully ignorant.

Yea that's fucked up, considering most of the world just accepted the Crimean annexation (because Russia scawy) and are now talking about how "Ukrainians are neo-nazis/fascists, the fighting in places like Donbass is justified lol".

Do better, DICE.

Should have called it unmarked russian soldier.

What makes it more blatant is that even if they somehow claim it is "unrelated", the term "little green men" has been in use from a geopolitical perspective for around a decade now to highlight "unofficial" participation of national military personnel in conflicts and warzones.

I didn't know that.
Little green men was completely new to me.

Still, that doenst make it right. With some people it evokes emotion of fear, anxiety, hate and sadness. Still i get where you coming from, since day and age we also play as american troops in most shooters and i can understand some part of the worlds there arent to fond of them also.

Hard to draw a line here. This is military fiction that is heavily inspired by real world politics. Is it cool to include SS uniforms in WW2 shooters? Or celebrating real weapons that kill people? I'd say it comes with the genre, even if it might offend people.

Is this an issue because it's fairly recent? I don't see anyone complaining about the Nazis, in videogames, who were the worst scum of the earth in the entire human history

The Nazis have been demonized (rightly so), many of them faced trial in Nuremberg in real-life for their actions.

No one has done anything of note regarding Russia sending military personnel and equipment to annex territory from Ukraine, it's just OK because Russia says "lol they're not our boys".

For a more relevant example, in Medal of Honor (2010), the OpFor faction was originally Al-Qaeda by name. It got dropped pre-launch because of the implication of playing as Al-Qaeda agents shooting U.S forces, so how would this request be any different?

I mean the Terrorist skins aren't explicitly named after RL groups. This BF skin is making a direct nod to the same group that annexed Crimea.
The Separatist skin in CSGO directly lifts both the iconography and the traditional appearance of the members of the separatist terrorist group ETA. Blows my mind this is still up for debate in 2021.
Still, that doenst make it right. With some people it evokes emotion of fear, anxiety, hate and sadness. Still i get where you coming from, since day and age we also play as american troops in most shooters and i can understand some part of the worlds there arent to fond of them also.
I'm not saying it's right, in my example ETA is still a very fresh part of our recent history in Spain and as such, its use in a videogame was deemed by many here as deeply insensitive. I'm just saying this particular case in BF2042 belongs to a wider debate we should be having about videogames as a whole, and more specifically military shooters.

The difference is the SS is dead, Russia is still actively oppressing their neighbors and beyond. Russian nationalists and dumbass neocommies will chase this skin like madmen.

It is a very common term in Finnish media, and I suspect the same is true for Sweden where this game was developed.

It is specifically used to describe Russian troops - without military insignia - who appeared in Crimea, and similar scenarios where Russia would use the same tactics.

It's not about videogames and is a 2 minute bit, but I always think of this vid whenever topics like this come up:

There's a wider debate to be had here and it's likely to be a little uncomfortable for all sides.

The difference it that WW2 ended almost 80 years ago, annexation of Crimea is a part of still on-going war.

Also, and somewhat more importantly, World War 2 is a thing that actually happened. The great Tornado War of 2042 is not yet real. If a Nazi uniform was included as a jokey unlockable reward skin in a game not set in World War 2, I would be, at best, puzzled.

What game is selling epic Nazi officer skin? Hell, for that matter, how many games let you play as a Nazi to begin with?
Not sure about skins, but every WW2 multiplayer shooter I know of let's you play Germans. Same for strategy games like Company of Heroes, Sudden Strike etc.
I recently played BFV and it came in a complete edition with lots of skins for all parties, including Germans and Japanese soldiers.

The difference is that in most WW2 games - apart from Wolfenstein series where you kill Nazis - you play as Axis which are German forces without Nazi insignia, and you are definitively not playing as SS.

Every call of duty set in World War II. Probably also, Battlefield 1942, 1943 and V. I remember there being a small uproar from the CoD community when they removed the swastika and replaced it with the iron cross, in CoD:WW2
Typically not called Nazi but Third Reich or Wehrmacht, which are associated with Nazi germany.

Has it? The CSGO terrorists all just look like generic non specific terrorists to me, but I haven't played in years either. I don't remember anything resembling real world people or organization on the terrorist side.
To be honest, this looks like a generic non specific terrorist/solider to me.

Where is the outrage at US army uniforms in the game. Or weapons that have killed thousands of innocents. This isn't crossing over a line. That line has been trampled to dust.

Other than Six days in Fallujah? Nowhere really.

Though in fairness, U.S spends a lot to whitewash their crimes, like how in Modern Warfare (2019) they imply the "Highway of Death" was a Russian atrocity (spending even 10 seconds with google will tell you that is firstly completely a historical event and secondly, who actually was responsible).

Also, it not crossing a line for you is not a justification for it existing. Many have legitimate reason to be appaled by the brazen attempt to make this into some in-game accessory.

Sure, Military shooters are always problematic wrt this stuff, but that is exactly why you would go for either a historical conflict or a fictional and/or futuristic one.

Shame on DICE to pull a very current conflict with war crimes into their game just to sell some EPIC skin.

BF is about War between two opposing forces and capturing points through violence and destruction. This is less abstract than most of the content but just put it in perspective that millions of people are paying 70 bucks to shoot each other. Is it maybe too soon, yeah but the point still stands just because your desensitized about your local war heroes doesn't mean they didnt kill anyone or left their mark in other countries by destroying countless life's.
