Bot Click Detection

Not every click on a short link is a human. Bot click detection separates real audience engagement from automated traffic — so your analytics reflect reality.

Definition

Bot click detection is the process of identifying and filtering automated, non-human click events from link analytics data. A bot click is any click event generated by software rather than a human visitor — web crawlers, email security scanners, link preview generators, or malicious automated traffic.

Without bot filtering, raw click counts include all automated traffic alongside genuine human engagement. For high-volume SMS campaigns or corporate email campaigns, bot traffic can represent a significant percentage of total recorded clicks — inflating metrics and distorting campaign performance assessment.

Common Sources of Bot Clicks

  • Email security scanners. Corporate email security systems (Microsoft Defender, Proofpoint, Mimecast and others) automatically follow every link in incoming emails to check for phishing and malware — before any human reads the email. These generate click events that appear as genuine traffic but represent zero human engagement. This is particularly significant for B2B email campaigns where corporate recipients are common.
  • Link preview generators. Social platforms (Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, Slack) crawl shared links to generate thumbnail preview cards. Each preview generation produces a click event.
  • Web crawlers. Search engine bots and general-purpose crawlers may follow short links they encounter in indexed content.
  • Messaging app crawlers. Some messaging platforms crawl links shared within conversations to generate previews or safety checks.
  • Malicious bots. Click fraud, competitor monitoring and vulnerability scanning bots may generate artificial click traffic on public-facing links.

How Bot Detection Works

Bot detection uses multiple signals in combination:

  • User-Agent analysis. Known bot User-Agent strings are identified in a maintained database. Googlebot, Bingbot, Facebookbot and hundreds of other crawlers advertise their identity in the User-Agent header — these are straightforwardly filtered.
  • IP reputation. Known datacenter IP ranges, VPN exit nodes, proxy services and bot network IP ranges are flagged. Legitimate human traffic rarely originates from datacenter IPs.
  • Click timing patterns. Multiple rapid clicks from the same IP within milliseconds of each other are a bot signature. Humans do not click the same link 50 times in 3 seconds.
  • Behavioural signals. Bots often lack contextual signals that human browsers carry — cookie state, JavaScript execution results, referrer context. Missing combinations of these signals trigger bot classification.

Bot filtering in Cuttly (Single plan and above) applies these detection methods and provides two analytics views: raw (all clicks) and filtered (human clicks only). Comparing the two views shows the proportion of automated traffic for any given link or campaign.

Why Bot Filtering Matters

For email campaigns to corporate audiences, email security scanner clicks can represent 20–40% or more of total recorded clicks. Without filtering, a campaign that appears to have driven 1,000 clicks may have driven only 650 genuine human clicks — a 35% overcount. Campaign ROI calculations, CTR benchmarks and A/B test results are all affected by unfiltered bot traffic.

For Indian SMS campaigns specifically, bot filtering is relevant because carrier preview systems and security infrastructure generate automated link checks before messages are delivered to recipients.
