Unique Clicks
Unique clicks counts each visitor once — giving a measure of real audience reach rather than total interaction volume.
Definition
Unique clicks is a link analytics metric that deduplicates click events to count each individual visitor only once within a defined time window. Regardless of how many times the same person clicks a link, they contribute only one unique click to the count.
This distinguishes unique clicks from total clicks, which counts every click event including repeat interactions from the same visitor. The relationship between the two metrics — the ratio of total to unique clicks — provides insight into audience behaviour and link quality.
Total Clicks vs Unique Clicks
Example scenario:
500 people receive an email with a short link.
300 click the link once.
50 click the link twice (checking it again later).
Total clicks = 300 + (50 × 2) = 400
Unique clicks = 300 + 50 = 350
In this example, unique clicks (350) is the better answer to "how many people engaged with this link." Total clicks (400) reflects overall interaction volume, including the 50 who returned to click again.
| Metric | What It Measures | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|
| Total clicks | All click events including repeats | Overall engagement volume, campaign traffic |
| Unique clicks | Individual visitors, deduplicated | Audience reach, list penetration |
How Unique Clicks Are Calculated
Deduplication is typically performed using a combination of IP address and User-Agent string within a rolling time window (commonly 24 hours). If the same IP + User-Agent combination clicks the link multiple times within the window, only the first click is recorded as unique. After the window resets, a new click from the same visitor counts as a new unique.
Deduplication is an approximation, not a perfect count of individuals:
- Multiple people on the same WiFi network share an IP address — their clicks may be combined into fewer unique counts than actual individuals
- One person using multiple devices or browsers appears as multiple unique clicks
- VPN users or mobile carrier IP rotation may affect deduplication accuracy
Despite these limitations, unique clicks remains the most practical available metric for estimating actual audience reach from link analytics without requiring visitor identification.
What a High Total-to-Unique Ratio Indicates
A high ratio of total to unique clicks — many total clicks relative to unique visitors — can indicate several things:
- Highly engaged audience. Visitors returning to access the linked content multiple times suggests valuable, reference-worthy content.
- Broken redirect loop. If a link redirects back to itself or creates a loop, a single visitor generates many total clicks.
- Bot traffic. Automated crawlers and scanners generate repeated clicks from the same IP ranges. Bot click filtering separates automated from human clicks.
- Email security scanners. Corporate email security systems automatically follow links in incoming emails to check for malware. These generate total clicks without any human action.

FAQ
What is the difference between total clicks and unique clicks?
Total clicks counts every click including repeats from the same visitor. Unique clicks counts each visitor once. For measuring audience reach, unique clicks is the more meaningful metric. For measuring total engagement volume, use total clicks.
How are unique clicks calculated?
By deduplicating click events based on IP + User-Agent within a time window (typically 24 hours). Same combination clicking multiple times within the window = 1 unique click. An approximation — not a perfect individual count — but the best available metric without visitor identification.
