Link Cloaking
Link cloaking means hiding a destination URL behind a different one. The term covers both legitimate affiliate link management and prohibited SEO manipulation — and the distinction matters.
Definition
Link cloaking is the practice of replacing a URL's visible or clickable address with a different URL that conceals the actual destination. The term is used in two distinct contexts with very different connotations:
- Affiliate marketing context. Replacing long, complex affiliate tracking URLs with clean, branded short URLs — primarily to improve link aesthetics, prevent affiliate ID stripping by browsers or users, and maintain brand-consistent link presentation. Generally legitimate when affiliate relationships are disclosed.
- SEO context. Showing different content to search engine crawlers than to human users — a prohibited practice that violates Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can result in manual penalties. This use of "cloaking" is entirely separate from link cloaking in the affiliate sense.
This entry covers link cloaking in the affiliate and link management sense. SEO cloaking (content cloaking) is a separate topic not related to URL shortening.
Link Cloaking vs URL Shortening
The terms are often used interchangeably in affiliate marketing contexts, but they have a technical distinction:
| Dimension | URL Shortening / Redirect | iframe Cloaking |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | HTTP redirect (301/302) | iframe embedding destination within cloaking page |
| Browser address bar | Changes to destination URL after redirect | Stays on cloaking domain — destination never visible |
| Destination transparency | Preview-able via URL inspection tools | Destination hidden from browser address bar entirely |
| Affiliate tracking | Parameters in redirect destination (preserved) | Parameters in iframe src (preserved) |
| SEO impact | Link equity flows to destination via 301 | Complex — iframe content may not be attributed |
| Affiliate programme acceptance | Generally permitted (varies by programme) | Often restricted by programme terms |
URL shorteners like Cuttly use redirect-based cloaking (standard HTTP redirects), not iframe cloaking. The destination URL is hidden from the visible link but is exposed in the browser address bar after the redirect completes. Preview mode in Cuttly (cutt.ly/preview) allows anyone to inspect the destination of any Cuttly short link before clicking — the destination is not hidden from users who wish to inspect it.
Why Affiliate Marketers Use Link Cloaking
Aesthetic Improvement
Raw affiliate URLs are long, contain tracking codes that expose the affiliate relationship, and include the affiliate network's domain (Amazon, ShareASale, CJ Affiliate) rather than the creator's brand. A cloaked link on the creator's own domain (go.yourchannel.com/product) is cleaner, more trustworthy and more brand-consistent.
Affiliate ID Protection
Some users, upon seeing an affiliate URL, manually remove the affiliate parameters before clicking — either from habit, privacy preference or to avoid "supporting" the affiliate. A cloaked redirect preserves the affiliate parameters in the redirect destination where they are not easily stripped by casual users. Note: technically sophisticated users can still inspect the redirect destination.
Link Management at Scale
Affiliate programmes change their URL structures, product IDs and tracking parameters periodically. A creator managing hundreds of affiliate links benefits from redirect-based cloaking because when an affiliate URL changes, only the redirect destination needs updating — not every instance of the link in every piece of content.
Programme Terms and Disclosure Requirements
Two obligations apply regardless of link format:
- Programme terms compliance. Each affiliate programme has its own terms regarding link modification. Some explicitly permit redirect-based cloaking; some restrict specific types of modification; some (notably Amazon Associates) have historically had specific requirements. Always review current programme terms — they are updated periodically and vary by programme.
- Audience disclosure. In most jurisdictions (US FTC, UK ASA, EU), affiliate relationships must be disclosed to audiences regardless of how the link is formatted. A cloaked link does not substitute for or eliminate disclosure requirements. The format of the link and the required disclosure of the commercial relationship are independent obligations.
What Link Cloaking Does Not Do
- It does not hide the destination from everyone. HTTP redirects are inspectable — tools like Cuttly's preview mode, browser developer tools, and link inspection extensions expose the destination URL of any redirect.
- It does not constitute an SEO cloaking violation. Redirect-based link cloaking does not show different content to search engines vs users — it is a redirect, not a content differentiation mechanism. This is categorically different from SEO cloaking.
- It does not guarantee affiliate tracking. If an affiliate programme's tracking system has issues or if the tracking parameters are handled incorrectly in the redirect destination, commission attribution can fail. Test affiliate links thoroughly before wide distribution.

FAQ
Is link cloaking the same as URL shortening?
They overlap in function but differ in intent. URL shortening is transparently a redirect; link cloaking specifically implies concealment of the destination. Cuttly uses redirect-based cloaking (standard HTTP redirects) — the destination is accessible via preview tools. Some cloaking uses iframes that keep the cloaking domain in the browser address bar permanently.
Is link cloaking allowed for affiliate links?
Depends on the affiliate programme's current terms. Many permit redirect-based cloaking with disclosure maintained. Always review specific programme terms before implementing. Disclosure of the affiliate relationship to the audience is required regardless of link format.
